Take down screw

I saw a article in the Fur-Fish-Game awhile back about handi rifles. This guy put a bold with a knurled head in place of the forend screw for quick take down.

What works good for this?

I swap barrels on a single frame, I just put a stubby screwdriver in my pocket when I go to the range.
A knurl knob sounds feisable, but I'm curiuos, why did the guy want a quick take down?
 I'd guess the knob would be in the way of my hand for my forearm hold.

I don't need a 'quick take-down' feature on my Handi's, but it is intriguing.  I actually wish I had the 'snap off' fore arm feature.  Don't know why, just seems neat, like my Dad's old shotgun.  A knurled knob would work, I don't really think it would be too bad on your hand either.  I played with a Savage 219 in 30-30AI for a bit and that had the 'snap off' forearm and I liked it.  I wish there were a simple conversion for the Handi's to that.  44 Man

Yes, the Survivor forend does have a quick takedown screw with knurled polymer head. It's semi-recessed. Most hardware stores carry variations of the screw shown in Airsporter's post. One could probably be adapted to a regular forend with a little work/ingenuity. Unless it was recessed, it might be a problem on a heavy recoiling caliber, though.

Most Bank robbers want a quick take down.......but then.......why would you hold up a bank with a Handi???

  I went to my local hardware store and got a screw with a common slot instead of one with a philips. A dime works just fine for me. No screw driver needed.

  If you didn't want to do that a swiss file and a hacksaw will fix the one that comes with the rifle.

I thought it sounded kind of cool, but when I am out hunting I don't thing I will carry a extra barrel with me, and a short screw driver is easy to carry.

A Swiss Army Knife will do!!  Actually I make slotted head screws for all my NEF/H&R, both the standard  thread (1/4-20) and the fine thread (1/4-28) from #14 X 3" wood screws.  Works fine.

He took it down to carry in his backpack. I think he followed hounds following lions. I got a knob at the local hardware store for my .243, but thought it was ugly. I don't need a quick takedown anyway.

Thou technically not a Handi, its IS a H&R and it IS a true take down!!





It started out as a 30" barreled "CHOKE" barrel. It was badly rusted for about 8-10 inches. SO, I pruned it!! Now its 19" and closely matches the length of the receiver and butt stock. Making it very compact and "handy". It's a faithful companion on my "jeep" trips as well as every camping trip. Many many times no one even knows I have it, but its pure peace of mind knowing Its there!!

I found a plastic knob/metal screw from a old CB radio mount that works well for mine. I had to add a washer, but what the heck I had one of those in the junk drawer also. ;) ;D

I always have my leatherman tool with me. It has a philips screwdriver in it that works just fine.

  I agree.  A snap off forend would be a nice touch.
