best bullet?
« on: November 06, 2003, 04:03:41 AM »
I'm not trying to start a "what is the best" war here, but I am wanting to hear what is the best bullet (in your opinions) for the 30/30 contender in both light and heavy weight ranges in a 14" and 10" barrel? I can't decide whether to start with ballistic tips, Hornady SST, single shot pistol bullets, or ??? I figure it would probably be best to get some opinions before I start off and try to learn from your experiences. I'm using ballistic tips in my 7x30 and I like them, and I know a lot of guys really like the single shot bullets also. I'm thinking from an earlier post that I'll try IMR-4198 for powder. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

It's really hard to go wrong with the Ballistic Tips from Nosler.  I use the 120gr variety in both 6.5mm & 7mm.  I don't see why they wouldn't be just as good in the .308 flavor.

i think several would be good ones. just find one your barrel shoots accurately, and go with it.  the sierra single shot pistol bullets work, and shoot good too. i also like the nosler balistic tips really well. a 125gr nosler bt should be great for deer! :D

flatlander,

Hornady 130 SSPSP bullets (#3021).  M.O.A. in my Super 14 in 30-30 caliber, and the price is right.  And, they performed (mushroomed) very well on several white-tails that I have connected with.  Good-luck...BCB

One bullet to consider is the Reminton 125 gr. PSP core lock.  Accurate, cheap and plenty effective on deer.  Nothing wrong with the other suggestions either.  My favorite heavy was Winchester 170 gr. Silver tips but alas they are no more.  I've heard the 220 grain Sierra RN will work in some rifles, not going to try them in mine.  170 seem enough for anything I will ever get to shoot with one.   I will try some 180 grain cast bullet though just for the fun of it.

Best in 3030

Well IF you don't have the X bullets suckitis. The very best killing 3030 bullet out there at normal 3030 ranges is the Barnes 150g 3030XFN. Now if you want to stretch that range a bit go with the 130g X or the 130g Sierra SSP bullet. I load all three of those in my 14 in Hunter of the three that 150 with that B   I   G hole in the end is like driving a pipe through a deer. It sure lets out a bunch of blood real quick.
Love those .41s'
