2 Cly. That Didnt work
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:44:19 AM »
Bought 2 cly. tanks, a oxg. and a carbon dioxide, Both are 9 in. OD, cut into on a big band saw. walls are .275, this gives a bore of 8 1/2 inch , . Bowling balls are 8.563 in cold state, The bore is 1/16 under size and out of round. , Need that big 3A 2400 tank size.  Looks like I got some big melting pots or wind chims.Darn, got 22 balls to shoot.

I put one ball on a 36in. circle sanding  machince, Didnt take much to take some off, but it looks like if it got turned in the bore it would be a big bomb.

Right.  So the plan is to ensure that it cannot turn in the bore.
That allows one to shave a only a band around the ball, meaning less cutting.

Running a bolt into or through the ball (or perhaps just a pin) that is fastened to a disk of (...) used as a sabot.

Minimum amount of work and gets the job done.

I turn them down all the way around. PITA but it works.  No good as a bowling ball anymore, though.

That sabot idea is interesting, though.  But with contact only at the center, the sabot might collapse from the powder force unless braced at least a half dozen places.

Might IMPROVE my game.  :D

How do you hold them ?   Mandrel or on centers?

I took a piece of wood 2 in. thick. cut hole in the center 6 3/4, outside is 9 in. ,set ball on it and turn it around by hand, I work in a pattern shop part time, On the big circle sander there is arm that swinges out with a center point on it, I may try using it also.. Not sure yet about how to make that sabet ball yet, Thanks

Why don't you just keep looking for the right cylinder.  Or  see if Southpaw can find another piece of the pipe he found and ship it to you.

This cumshaw sanding thing, just makes me nervous...besides sounding like a bunch of work to make the wrong tube work.

I originally made a radius cutter for the cross slide.  The last time I just made straight cuts until it would roll all the way in.

I hold the ball by opening the 3 jaw as far as possible and use the tail stock with rotating center to push the ball against the chuck.  Not a perfect method as sometimes the cutter grabs the ball and the ball stops rotating while the chuck continues.  Rotate the ball and make more cuts until it passes the roll test.

And it does make a BIG mess of plastic chips or strings.

A very common phrase among men is:  "it seemed like a good idea at the time".  Have you ever said it when you were happy?  Get that ball wedged in when it goes off and you will have a big pipe bomb.  Prepare to give us all some bad press.

Hey Joe: I am not going use these tubes, Like you said a p.b., I am going to put  up a note at the gun shop and sell them for long range gongs for shooting at or maybe sell the bottoms for lead melting pots or make bells out of them.$10.00 each.Lesson learned, you need a AA2400 tank size or one that is 29 1/2 round. Here is my reject pile   ::)

They are a real crowd pleaser . Every one loves to go out and give them a push .

Originally there were to be 4 . Tuned to play with a 10-22 with 25 round clip.
Wife nixed that as she thought the drive by shooters might hit the house.  ::)

Hey Southpaw get some little clangers and something to catch the air with ! Big old wind chimes ...low notes ?

They do not need clangers

A gentle Montana Breeze makes them chime softly .  8)

A hard wind makes the wife make me tie them up !  ::)

The distance between them makes the difference as to how much "breeze" is needed to get the mellow soft tones.

At first I tried tuning them  by cutting different lengths . Tough to do by my self so just let them be sharp flats , etc.  Original idea was to have perfect pitch scale.

A hard wind really makes  them cry out .  Harsh , angry clanging a bit nerve wracking .  :-\

North wind is the worst .

That would work , I know a fellow who uses one as a cabin dinner bell. Sort of like the old triangles seen in old western movies where the cook calls the crew.
