Fallow Mount is Back! Nice work....
« on: April 19, 2008, 03:32:21 AM »
Finally got the mount back of the fallow I shot at Wild Hill last year.  I think the Taxidermist did a great job!

Doc:

That's a fine mount, I'm glad your taxidermist is a genuine pro!

How many points on that buck?

Was it a long shot?  Spot & stalk or hunting from blind?

What rifle did you hunt with?

Thank you for answering my questions.

Respectfully yours,
TR

Hi TR,

Thanks for the accolades.  My new taxidermist is alright!!  He has 24 points and measures about 220-ish SCI ( a silver medal).

I used a 243 on the fallow which dressed at 158lbs (a real butterball).  A 95gr NosBT / 43.5gr H414 at 3040fps in a ruger m77 ultralite.  Wouldn't do it again I don't think.  The bullet performed well.  First shot broke the shoulders at about 50yds.  Took a second shot at about the same distance from above (we were on a hill side and the deer was below us).  Interestingly enough...the 2nd bullet entered where the shoulder and the neck meets and exited just behind the sternum.  A real sharp angle was that shot.  The 3rd shot was a finisher.  Postmortem shows the 1st shot broke both shoulders and the deer ambled away, didn't run.  The second shot (a top to bottom shot) deflated the lungs and the 3rd took out the heart (actually, it came out in three pieces).  The bullet performed well, but, I'd like more shock that I think a larger diameter bullet would give.

Doc:

I still have not decided where to hunt trophy fallow deer.  But I'm leaning toward this ranch in western Nebraska. www.elkplanet.com
Main reasons are large acreage for spot & stalk hunting + proximity to my friends in Black Hills.  Many of the exotic hunting outfits I phoned are focused on semi-concealed shacks overlooking bait.  But that doesn't match my style.

Any feedback you can share is appreciated.  Thank you.

TR

PS I've had good experiences with .243 but my shots were typically well beyond the 150 yard mark.  I think I'll take your advise and hunt with 35 Remington and modern Hornady ammo.

Hi TR

Semi concealed shacks....over baits????

Not even in TX did I hunt that way...though I did get into an elevated blind to get out of the sun one day and shot an axis from it.

The ranch you posted looks pretty good, seems to have a pretty good assortment of animals.  I didn't get the size though...didn't read through the site as thoroughly as I could have.  Only advise I have is to go in September just as they come out of their velvet....and...before the ranch gets shot out!!!

Hi Dr
Have a chance to take some Fallow Does or young bucks at a ranch.  How did the meat taste and do you prepare it any certain way?  Thanks    Nice trophys.

Fallow meat is quite good but axis is better. I don't eat white tail meat at all. No special prep needed just cook as you would any game meat.

I don't do much too fancy with venison...cook it like any other meat but not too long.  I do use alot of good seasons italian dressing for marinade though.  I like to BBQ a lot.  Axis is better than fallow which is better than WT, in my opinion.  It's cooking boars that I creative!

Thanks guys.   Thought about getting a couple of fallow deer this year.  And I've only had WT backstraps and jerky.  So hopefully it tastes better than WT.  thanks again
