Sniper TV show got me thinking about scope mounting
« on: February 14, 2010, 11:09:29 PM »
Was watching one of the History Channel Sniper shows and am wondering if I caught some excellent info on scope mounting or not.

I'm pretty sure I noticed a fair number of rifles with scopes mounted in rings that were as far forward on the scope tube and as far back on the scope tube as possible, so there was no chance of the scope tube slipping inside the rings forwards or backwards due to recoil. The front ring was right up against the front lens "bell", and the rear ring right up against the rear lens "bell".

I guess it would take some time to find a scope, rings and rail to do this. Does anyone setup their scopes this way?

Scopes move only one way due to recoil and that is forward so if you have the turret flush against the forward ring it's not gonna move under recoil. Of course unless you have a really heavy kicker it will not move anyway if the scope is properly mounted.

You mount a scope with the rings as far apart as you can not to prevent slippage but for mechanical advantage for scope stability.  The further apart the rings are the more rigid the scope mount is and the better it will hold zero.  Larry

I saw that too, interesting to say the least.
But keep in mind, it's still Hollywood. I know a gent that was an advisor when they did one on the "Mountain Man". Several times when he pointed out an inconsistancy in the filming he was told it's for entertainment.
But it sure does lead you to respect the guns they use. What I found interesting is all that info/equipment is available to the civilian market, albeit premium $, except the "prioritized" powder the use.

You have to expand on that one, it is above my pay grade.
