A Disaster In The Making
« on: October 16, 2011, 12:24:17 PM »
I went to my local gun shop today and the guy behind the counter showed me a Handi Rifle in .30-06, on an NG prefix frame.

If I read the info here correct, isn't this a disaster waiting to happen ?  It's my understanding that all center fire rifles have to be mounted on frames with HN or NN, or later, prefixes.

The word HANDI was also missing the letters HA. It looked hokey to me.   :-\

needs to be an sb2 receiver, no matter what the serial prefix is....
check the FAQ's for instructions on tell'n the difference in sb1 and sb2 receivers.
and pay attention to early model information also......

n or before, are factory chamberings only......centerfire or shotgun

in the original h&r days, they did not designate sb1 or sb2. semi-skeletonized receivers are kinda touchy..... i have several but only use them on low and medium pressures.
 ;)
i have found a few high pressure chamberings on sb1 receivers in pawn-shops before.
after explain'n this to the owner of the shop and showing him this website, its all good now.
they were parted out.

Fred,

I have a 30-06 barrel that came from the factory on an NG (1992) SB2 frame.   Like Doc says you got to inspect the rear end of the frame to determine if it is SB1 or SB2 as the serial numbers prior to spring 2008 do not help.  On guns made in Illion, NY since spring of 2008 the serial # prefix will tell you if it is an SB1 or SB2.

The shop is going to check the SN with NEF to make sure its a legitimate '06.  It just didn't look right to me.

I carry the SN info with me now on my iPhone to reference year of manufacture, just in case I come across a pawn shop gun.   ;)

I believe the current H&R accessory barrel policy has much to do with liability.  H&R 1871, LLC did not extend their product warranty to H&R guns made prior to the LLC's takeover in 2000.
