Lee Enfield chamber adapters.
« on: May 15, 2010, 11:17:04 AM »
So, I have heard tell of a chamber adapter insert that would allow me to shoot 7.62x39 in my .303 Enfields.
Anyone know where I can find one of these?
Anyone ever use one, and can share results?

I've seen them for 308 win or 7.62x51 but not for 303. the company was out of Alaska do a google search ya might find it. If I remeber the company didn't have a very good track record as far as costomer service.

30-30                    223 stainless steel   20ga TDC

MCA Sports, guys name is Ace.

http://www.mcace.com/

I have 3 or 4 of his converters.  I am overall been pleased.  I did order a 30.06 to 7.62x39 and it didn't fit.  I emailed twice and no responce.  I STILL like Ace and will continue to use products however.

I have the .308 and 30.06 to 7.62x25 chamber adapters , and it is WAY cool!

Yeah, I have looked around and already checked out this site.
http://www.mcace.com/

They don't have the adapter listed, so I e-mailed about this specific one, that has been several days ago, so far no response.
Maybe someone mis-typed, or maybe I mis-read, and this isn't even available.
Would be neat though.

I know dang well Sportsmans guide had .32 acp in .303 awhile back.

I can come up with one real good reason why its not there....STUPID me.

The 30.06 to 7.62x39 chamber adapter is using both rounds as a centerfire "normal" extraction.  By this I mean both x39 and .06 are extracted with a claw extractor on a "normal base".
The .303 is a rimmed base.  How would you extract teh fired x39 casing?  You COULD have Ace make a chamber adapter that is removable.  You place a x39 shell into a steel outline of a .303 and then fire inside your cahmber, extract the entire rig and then piund out the x39 shell.  I don't think it would be feasible this way either though as chamber pressures would surely split the stell case.  The 32 acp is a SMALL pressure in comparison to x39.   The steel inserts hold up but the case needs to be small enough for easy loading into your chamber......that in itself leaves "too much room" for expansion.....break would occur.

Other than that it woudl be a go  ;)   I LIKE the idea but as there is not a 54r to x39 I think the .303 is on the same line.

Reload to x39 speeds and bullet weights and call it good :):)

The other issue to think about also is that 303 brit is a .311 bullet and 7.62 is .308

I have a bunch of those adapters but haven't been able to contact mca in a couple of years.

As to the adapters:  if you get one do not glue or lock-tite it into the chamber, you will most likely never get it out.  I chamber and eject them with each shot.  If you get a adapter you will need to understand that the steel fireforms to the chamber of the first rifle it is fired in and will, most likely, not chamber in any other.

I prefer using pistol caliber adapters in rifles because they are fun.  The 32 acp, 30 Luger or 7.62x25 from a 06 or 308 is enjoyable and fun and you can load some very funky heavyweight, slow moving loads perfect for the garden or range.  For me however there would be no utility in chambering down a 303 Brit to something like 7.62x39, unless you are just looking for something to do.  Plentiful ammo - yeah, but 7.62x39 costs a bunch and if you want a 123 gn .311 bullet to travel at 2400'/sec from a 303 British, you should handload for it, the 123 gn bullet is well used in the 303 and it never had a thing to do with the soviet round.  jmtcw.

Thanks for the input. As I said earlier, either a case of someone mis-typing, or me mis-reading.
Wouldn't be my first mistake.
I just thought it would be a neat idea, as I have a couple of the old British war horses, and always have plenty of the soviet round on hand.
I have some .303, but I don't reload, and the soviet round seems to be cheaper and easier to get in bulk.
I'll just chalk this one up to wishful thinking.
Thanks.

If one of those old british war horses is feeling neglected you could send it to me. I'd be happy to give it a work out along with mine. Mine gets alot of work with the woodchucks!

Nice try, spikehorn, but I'm not abandoning my Enfields, I really like them.
I just thought a cheaper plinking round would be cool.

Well ya know being the nice guy that I am, I figured I'd try and help ya out!  What ammo are you currently shooting ? I have a 1942 long branch Mk4 No1* that really likes the Wolf gold 150gr sp bt and I get it $12 a box.

Are you sure it was 7.62X39? Sportmans guide is selling inserts to fire 7.62X25 pistol rounds in your .303.

Spikehorn, I have a few bags of some surplus ammo I got at a gun show, I don't know what kind it is but it shoots pretty good. Whenever I have hunted with the .303 I usually use Remington ammo. I will look in to the Wolf, that sounds like a good deal. Love my #4's.
Gandog, I have looked at several sites and have seen the pistol round insert, the confusion stemmed from a post I read somewhere, that was mistyped or misread, thanks though.
