any AK coastal folks dealing w Tsunami warnings?
« on: February 27, 2010, 11:27:23 PM »
Quite a quake down there in Chile. Got to wondering how many Alaskans were out recreating along the coast and if the tsunami warnings were a problem?  Glad to hear so far that only a 1-2 foot ripple hit King Cove and other areas.  What about you in Valdez Dave or in Seward Corbanzo?

Hope this doesn't mean we're in for a big one soon. Never know. I think these big quakes will trigger others eventually. The 1964 was enough for me - was living in Anchorage at the time. We later hosted kids from Valdez who's brother and father barely got off the dock before it collapsed.

Dand:  Be watchful, I saw this morning that they were predicting possiable Tsunami hitting from Kodiak to Attu.  You know if it hits ths Alutians it will wrap aroung and through then come across Bristol Bay.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sourdough, yep our emergency folks were on alert and our radio station announced some warnings then cancellation later.  I sure figured the Aleutians and Ak Pen would protect us but maybe not. We're about 2 miles from the beach and maybe 75 feet elevation so I haven't been too worried.

When I lived in Sand Point and they had less info on the tsunami warning system, we sometimes had to head to high ground several times in a 2 wk period. People quit paying attention. Since then the system improved, and there are less false alarms. But some folks there live only a few feet 10-20 above normal high tide and 30-50 from the water. Old timers remembered when a bunch of skiffs were swept away one night and other stuff on the beach was moved around.

SE AK- that wild game feed sounds like a lot of fun. I just finished dinner but you made me hungry again! Glad no tidal wave for you.

Friends of ours in Hawaii are now wondering what they'll do with the life time supply of peanut butter they bought. They said the stores were limiting folks to 2 cases of spam per family. Did you know Hawaiians are the only folks who eat more Spam than Alaskans?

I better see if I can donate something to the Chile recovery effort. We have a really nice Chilean lady who lives here. I wonder how her family fared.
