45 LC question
« on: February 18, 2010, 02:51:41 AM »
well,it's not a new question. It's just something i haven't got thru my thick skull yet. I've got the 45 LC Carbine barrel with the factory front sight. It's a Marbles 57W bead type, it measures .570 from bottom of dovetail to top of sight. The depth of the dovetail is .100 so that leaves .470 from top of barrel to top of sight. I mounted a WGRS peep and according to my crude bore sighting arrangement it looks like the front sight is a hair short. I clamped the barrel lug in a Black and Decker workmate, sighted thru the bore at a specific spot, then raised my head slightly to see where the sights are aiming.Looks to me like i need about .500 of front sight above the barrel to shoot a hunting load and a slightly reduced target load. Don't plan on shooting past 125 yds with this gun. What are you guys using for a front sight(height) with the LC Carbine barrel and the WGRS peep?

I'm waiting on the answer to that one myself.

Mine seems to be .395 from barrel to center of bead,I am trying to use the sight off a BC 45/70.

I'm thinking you're likely gonna need a front sight that is ~.625" above the barrel to work with the 45Colt, I've used a .375" Williams shotgun shorty ramp with a .250" firesight insert on 45-70 and 44mag with the WGRS, that combination worked fine with 350gr jacketed at ~1500fps in the 45-70 and 225gr factory LE ammo in the 44mag.  ;)

Tim,
That's almost identical to what I had come up with. I had thought .730" from the bottom of the dovetail and if the dovetail sits .100" lower than the top of the barrel, then our results are only .005" apart.

I was just figured what worked with the 44mag should be real close to the 45Colt, they have similar trajectories, I don't remember how much I had to monkey with elevations when I swapped the sights out, but there was sufficient sight travel to accommodate both chamberings.  ;)

just got back from the range. Took the 45LC with the factory front sight(.470 above barrel), a .570 handi screw on sight, and a ramp and insert sight off a Remington rifle that measured .660. Using a mid range cast load(250 gr bullet @ 14-1500 fps) I started with the .470 and the peep all the way down. This was over the target. Next I duct-taped the .570 to the barrel and 3 rds hit just at the top of the paper. Took the .570 off and "installed"(taped) the .660 to the barrel and 3 rds hit the bottom edge of the paper. All shooting was done at 50 yds with the WGRS peep sight set all the way down. Looks like .620-.625 should be perfect sight height for the 45LC Carbine barrel and WGRS peep sight....just like Tim says
