I doubt there is a bank in the state that will cash a postal money order and certainly none of the banks local to me will. They say there are way too many forged postal money orders floating around. They will accept them for deposit only and it takes much longer for one to clear your account than it does a personal or business check.

The PO here check them over with a fine tooth comb before accepting them as well. Even the PO doesn't like them around here. Dunno if it's just a local or state wide problem but down here folks don't trust PO money orders.

There are a few POs that get a lot of traffic everday. I just have to hit them at the right time and have cashed a $750 MO one day. I use the MO to cover the shipping and it brings the amount down some. This time was only 210 and figured I would be in shipping, insc and comfirmation about 20.

Southernutah,  I sure hope Tim agrees with you.  I only use Postal money orders and if the post office does not have enough to cash it I ask to cash it the next day and they accomadate.  best thing is they cna check to make sure its not BOGUS for you.  They just type the numbers in. And ZTim is right once issued they cannot have a stop payment on them.  They required cash to buy and they are considered cash to whoms name is on the check.  If you also send the payment with Delivery confirmation and certified they are required to sign for it.  This would then be considered US mail fraud iif they dont supply you with what you bought.  Condition of items is your call. Best of luck.  i think you were right to do what you did.  jsut have him tell his credit union to refund him tthe money and get a USPS money order.

My local post office says that the person buying a PO MO can in fact cancel it after they've shipped it and before you cash it. They say however once you cash it at a post office it cannot be but that if I deposit it to my checking account it can be stopped by the person who bought it.

Perhaps right or perhaps wrong but the folks at the local post office believe it.

I always ask for Paypal, Postal MO or personel check( if they have been here for a while and have some good feedback.) If they send me a MO from Walmart ETC., a personel MO from their bank then DEAL IS CANCELLED AND I RELIST.

That's more misformation, the only options for the purchaser is to redeem a money order, or if they have the receipt, report it missing or stolen, that won't stop payment or cancel the money order. I was the accounting clerk for the Vancouver Post Office for over 24yrs before I retired, I handled money order claims daily, there is no way to stop payment on a money order. When the customer files the PS6401 Money Order Inquiry and pays the $5.40 fee,  the USPS will determine if the MO has been cashed and by whom, they'll provide copies of the cashed money order just like a cashed check. Missing money orders won't be replaced until after 60 days.

 14.3.9 Payment Inquiry

A purchaser, payee, or endorsee may, at any time, inquire about payment of a domestic money order by completing, signing, and filing Form 6401 and paying the appropriate fee; a separate form and fee are required for each money order. The fee is not required if Form 6401 is filed by a bank, other financial institution, government agency that processes money orders directly with the Federal Reserve Bank, or postal official engaged in official USPS business.

I would just ask the person I'm buying from what they would like for form of payment.  Then no problems.  If I want something from someone, I will get what they want me to, to seal the deal.  DP

Didn't have time to read the entire thread yet but I thought I'd add my two cents in here.

I can get money orders at Wal-Mart for .99 cents.  I think ???  Wall-Mart is a nation-wide store, isn't it?  I've seen them in states ranging from the east coast to as far west as Utah, Wyoming, and Arizona.

I've recently received an offer on an item I have up for sale from someone and the whole thing sounded fishy to me.  Ironically, it's from the same member as the one that sent the money order to Southernutah.  This members angle was/is the following:  (and quoted {cut and paste} from a PM)

I will take this barrel, can I send you a money order drawn on my credit union. I will sent on 22 Feb 10.

That message was sent to me on the 16th.  I returned a message asking if the delay was because he had to wait until he received funds from a job or otherwise.  His reply was:

My son is buying a barrel from me on Friday or Saturday when he get paid.
So Monday I will get the money order to you. If this is O.K.
Send me your address

I thought about it and asked myself, if his son is buying the barrel, then why wouldn't his son just give him the money to get a money order made or just get the money order himself?  Also, if his son was interested in buying it, why wouldn't he just sign on to the group and deal with me directly?  Additionally, how can this member sell something that he doesn't yet own to his son?  The whole excuse and delay seems fishy to me which is what lead me to ask Southernutah about what happened with one of his sales with the same member.

Greyeard or any of the moderators, if you need to know who this member is, feel free to contact me about it.

Chris

He says in his correspondence that he is selling a barrel to his son not your or the barrel to his son.  I'm guessing he is talking about a different barrel that he currently owns.

OK, I guess I mis-read/mis-interpreted the line he wrote.  However, I believe most people just get a postal money order, that has been my past experience with money orders.  I am not familiar with what a personal credit union money order is...never heard of one.  Once I spoken with Sounthernutah and heard that the money order he had received from this member wouldn't be processed by his bank, I decided to let it go.  In the end, it's the seller's choice in which they want to be paid, is it not?

Never cease to amaze me how people can't do this.
Someone says they want a USPS money order I give them a USPS money order.

Why is that so hard to do? ???

Blackhawker he should have his generic MO back by now so he should have the money if the MO was real. FWIT these older barrels in good shape with open sights still there are getting fewer and fewer.

Naah, I just decided not to deal with him.
It'll sell or I'll just keep it and continue to use it.  I agree though, it's hard to find open sighted barrels these days.

I had thought about that reading this thread, but if I owned the site I'd be leary as well. That's a lot of risk to take on. PayPal may offer a service to online communities like GBO so they can conduct internal transactions over their system, but they'd want their pound of flesh.

Personally, I've done alot with PayPal and not a single problem; never a firearm, but parts and accessories. Postal MO are a pain in the butt, especially since they closed down several branches for economic reasons.

You guys don't need the headach. You couldn't do it for free either. Most of the deals are only  a few hundred bucks but treated like the national debt.

The reason I use a cashiers check whenever possible as stated earlier, for the added security along with what others have stated.
1-A Postal MO needs to be cashed at a PO.
2-Most banks will only take them on deposit, up to 3 days
   wait before funds are available.
3-Cashiers checks are instant, meaning they can be cashed
   almost anywhere.
4-They are free at my bank.
5-My bank is on my side of town where I am anyway most any
   day of the week.
The PO is on the other side where I very seldom have any
   business.
6-It easier to track a cashiers check, and no waiting period.
