Sig 226 FTE with WAP
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:53:54 AM »
I took my first 9mm reloads out to the range yesterday and ran in to some problems.
First the info
Powder: WAP
Primers: CCI SPP
Brass:   Winchester
Bullet:   122 gr Rainier Lead TC

All rounds ran through a P11 with no problems

For the Sig 226
4.6 gr. - all 5 rounds FTE
4.8 gr. - all 5 rounds FTE
5.0 gr. - 4 rounds would FTE 5th would be ok. (this happened over 4 mags each with 5 rounds)
WWB - 25 rounds no problems

I will bump up the powder based on the WAP chart but I wanted opinions on whether this is only a powder issue or somethis else.

Thanks
Steve

Based on this initial data, I'd say you just need a little more powder-er-ar! :D (Say that like Tim the Tool Man Taylor)

I can't recall my last 9mm loading with WAP and Berry's plated (should be extremely similar to the Rainier).  I can check tonight.

Sorry for the extra day's delay.  My log shows that I have loaded 9mm Luger with Berry's plated 115gr. RN bullets (1.15" COAL) with Winchester Action Pistol (WAP):

as light as 5.2 gr. in Federal brass w/federal primers, and
as heavy as 6.5 gr. in Speer and Federal brass with CCI primers

I have noted zero functional failures through my Kahr auto-loader with this range of charges of WAP & 115s.

Forgot to post:

FWIW, Hornady doesn't list any charge weight difference for lead vs. jacketed.  They list 4.2 - 5.8 gr. WAP under their 124-grainers.  Speer does separate them.  Speer said (back in #12) 4.2 - 4.6 under their 125-gr. RNL, or 5.4 - 6.0 under their jacketed 124s.  Happy shooting!

MZ5 Thanks for all the info.

I received load data from Winchester current manufacturer that states the limit is 5.1gr for 122gr lead.
I'll bump it up a little bit and see. It will be a couple of weeks though as I am build a dedicated (small) reloading bench.
I'm going to have to go back and review my books.

Again thanks
