Scope mounting on 7 X 57 MM Mauser
« on: December 25, 2002, 04:04:16 PM »
I have an old 7 X 57 MM Mauser... I forget the model, but I do know that it is the least strong and least expensive of the bunch... Anyway, I would love to add a scope to this rifle. Is there any sort of mounting system available for these old guns? Thanks.

Contact Warne Manufacturing.  They make very good scope mounts for virtually all types of rifles.  I have purchased several rings and bases from them for a lot of my rifles and I really like them.

I'm not sure if they have what you are looking for, but they would be more than willing to help you.  Their customer service is quite good.

IronKnees,

Are you wanting to keep the action original/unaltered or is it okay to drill and tap the action for a scope?

I've converted a lot of Mausers throughout the years and they're worth the hassle and expense if in good condition - even the pre-98s.

Unless you're trying to keep the action unaltered, you'll need to drill and tap the action for the scope bases. There are "no drill, no tap" mounts out there, but they are an ugly funky solution.

Brownell's gunsmithing supply has everything you'll need either way, along with a price guideline chart for various gunsmithing services.

To properly drill and tap the action really requires a jig or a mill. It can be done by hand, as a last resort, but chances are it'll be messed up. You'll need to alter the bolt handle for scope clearance too. This requires cutting off the handle and welding it or a new one on.

The old pre-98 Mauser actions are fine, and, if in very good condition, worthwhile to scope. Stick to lower pressure loads - don't try to stoke it to the max.

IronKnees,

Forgot to mention peep sights. Lyman and Williams both make peep sights for your rifle. Brownell's carries them as do others. Both sights require two holes  be drilled and tapped on the side of the aft bridge of the receiver. Easy to do.

IronKnees,

I can highly recommend the MoJo Phase III Peep Sights.  The rear peep is mounted over the existing sight base with the hingepin and spring loaded.  The front peep is a dovetail and replaces the existing blade. They're about $45 complete.  http://www.mojosights.com/index.html

SavageT,

Have you used the Mojo sights out in the field on game?

It's my understanding the object of the aperture sight is to put the aperture as close to the eye as possible.

Rocky, :P

I agree with your concerns. Mounting the rear aperture over the existing back sight, it is about 12" away from your eye. With the dual aperture system though, it is very fast on target.  I have not used it hunting, only at the range.  I'm not certain if they have a MoJo system designed for your Mauser??  You should e-mail them and ask those questions.  Good Luck with your decision.

Hi savageT,

Thanks for the post. We tried those type of sights years ago and, while they worked ok off the bench, they were slow and not very user friendly in the field. I believe the militaries of several countries came to the same conclusion. There was an article in MANMagnum magazine (South African publication) a few years ago wherein they were using a sight which basically consisted of two short tubes (about 1" in length) of about 1/4" diameter - one in the middle of the barrel, one at the very end. Never heard any more about it since that one article and I've always wondered how they fared.

There are two piece mounts and one piece mounts for the do you have a small ring or large ring mauser? Numrich has the mounts and rings you have to figure the height of rings you need I have the high rings for my mauser project gun with a 6X24X40mm varmit scope.  It costs about $40 to $50 for the mount and rings the one piece mount will be easier for you to do.  i'm using the two piece mounts first you have to fit the rear mount then I put masking tape where both mounts go assemble the scope with the mounts put it on the gun then you have to eyeball the scope in the center of the gun you could draw a line off the front mount first on the masking tape. Drill and tap the front site first mount the scope with the rear site on and check the location of the rear site and mark it. Then drill and tap the rear mount holes to the reciever its not hard just go slow.
The one piece is a little easier you just center it and mark your holes and drill/tap.                                                          BigBill :D
