« on: February 09, 2010, 03:44:49 PM »
What guns in 45 acp do you conceal carry?
1911 fullsize?
1911 compact?
Glock 30 or 21?
Taurus Millenium?
Other?
Some say full-size 1911 too much?
I am 5'9" , 185 lbs

I am of the opinion--in a 1911, semi-auto--that size has NO meaning in Concealed carry.
Now, if you carry as a living, weight comes into play. that is not what we are talking about.
I carry, on a regular basis, a Sig P220, a Sig P239, Government 1911's, Commander sized weapons in 1911's, LW Colt Colt Commander and even a PPK.
It really doesn't depend, that much, on dress.
I don't carry revolvers because of the cylinder.
I don't like big caliber, small, mouse guns.
Size, of the gun, is not the issue.
I don't use holsters.
A Commander sized weapon, the Sig 239, is a most comfortable carry for several hours.

valkrod,
NBA 22 Mag?
Is that a small .22 magnum like North American or is that a model of gun that mag fits the millenium?

williamlayton ,
I carry all kind of stuff from .380 to now a glock 27 or glock 23 in 40sw. I miss the idea of a 45. I used to carry a glock 30 in 45acp. That was a heavy gun, accurate, but heavy. I usually carry at 4 oclock IWB. Figure a compact Taurus P145 or small single stack.

When I carry a .45, its a 1911, usually a Commander sized gun, though lately I have been carrying a Kimber Ultra Carry 3 inch with laser grips, and I like it a lot.  Pushing about 600 rounds now with no jams.  A full size 1911 isn't hard to conceal with an inside the waist band holster, as the longer barrel length is hidden in your pants.  As much as I like Glocks, and carry a #26 .9mm often, they are a little on the thick side.

I usually carry my Ruger 345 - Inside waistband.  Not too heavy, accurate, and tucks right there under my belly slab... ;D

A Colt 1911 .45 and a XD compact .45.  I carry the 1911 more often than the XD. It is easier to conceal inside the waist band than the XD with light clothing.

I carry a Colt Officers model 45acp. in an IWB Mitch Rosen holster (very comfortable) with one spare mag holder on the off side.  My back up is a Colt Mustang 380 or Ruger LCP in the pocket depending on dress needs.

If you carry a "big" gun, carry a .45acp.  A 9mm or a .38 is silly, IMO.  Neither will stop a determined assailant.  They are (like a .380) simply a deterrent, so you might as well go light and carry the .380.  Barrel length in a 1911 is not as much a factor as weight, for daily carry.  An alloy frame 1911 of any barrel length will serve you well if you want certain protection.

9mm hardball is the military's choice, because anyone can handle it, the round is universal within NATO, and because a wound is as good or better than a death, in battle.  Such is not the case on the street's of our own country.  We carry because we need to immediately STOP threats to our lives.  A 9mm is little more than a .38 Special.  One shot from such a puny weapon might deter an attack, but it might not.  A .45 will.

So, the way I see it, there's no middle ground.  Put up with the extra size and weight, thereby being confident you won't be outgunned, or carry something weak but convenient.  It's in our minds, really.  If you believe you might have to defend yourself against a determined aggressor, think big and think 45acp or .44 Special.  If you are not law enforcement, and you can't reasonably foresee an incident where someone wants to kill you no matter what, think small.  The older I get, the more I tend toward the latter.  I don't believe that a few rounds of .380 would not stop someone from trying to hurt me.  Nobody wants to get shot with anything.  Unless they really, really hate me, or have some other notion to single me out to die, I can't see toting around a burdensome hunk of steel.  Keep the big guns at hand and at home.

9MM and .38 are the same round basically.
Super .38 can be loaded to near .357 range (the .357 is a 9mm/.38) and the 9x23 can be hotter than the .357.
I prefer the 9x23 or .38 super and don't feel undergunned---now, I often have one of the .45's, so, if you would rather chance being shot with the .38 you need to call ahead. ;D :-*

I carry a G36 most days, either in a Crossbreed supertuck or a smart carry.
Some people are a lot like slinkys, not really good for anything but you can't help be smile when they tumble down the stairs.

I'm a "big man", so my options expand, like my size!  I've carried a Detonics.45 and a Para Wart Hog in Ankle holsters unseen. ( .38s too).  My Springfield Armory 5" has Pachmyers(SP?) + a Clip Grip, which allows a fairly secure inside the belt carry.  I've also carried a Sig P220 .45 w/Hogue rubber grips inside thw belt.  If you don't want/have a good holster, bicycle inner tube/multiple rubber bands around a grip will aid in securing a weapon inside a snug belt. My Glocks all have the bike inner tube added( 1 tube = 15 guns 4 $2.50) Note: grip size & tube size need to match (G-17 vs G21).  As you may see, most of my CCW has been under cover as an LEO, so I needed to HIDE a gun, not just not piss off some weinie-wagger liberal. You have a DUTY, as a CCW carrier, to be aware of your surroundings, to be a responsible, to don't do something cowboy just because you have a weapon. CYA!!!
