how is everyone doing with the snow

hey guys how is everyone dealign with the snow this past round of snow is a rough additation to what we had already. also want to send a working out for the folks with flats roof to watch the amount of snow and weight on them there have been reports of colaps due to this. hope everyone is holding in there. be safe out there.

Kind of tired seeing snow for this winter. I'm ready for some sunny 50 degree days. Well even 40 would be great. The long range forecast doesn't call for anything much above 30 and mostly lows in the teens. So any of it won't be melting soon. 26 inches on Sat. and another 7-8 yesterday. Getting to old to enjoy shoveling much, that part of it kind of sucks. My quad with a plow was useless. It does work great, just not on 26 inches.
 It sure is pretty though, with it all hanging on the branches.  I'm just thankful I didn't lose power. I know many did. I'm working with two guys that live in Washington county and they still don't have power.
 I hope we don't get much more. Kind of running out of space to put it all. I guess thats a big problem in Pittsburgh and other cities and towns. Pittsburgh has three huge rivers in the middle of it, but they are not allowed to dump any snow in the rivers. How stupid is that. Leave it to the EPA to make up stupid laws. They should just dump it in the rivers and pay the fine. It probably would be cheaper in the long run.


I haven't seen any deer tracks in the fields. They can paw through six inches or so to get to the grass, but not this snow cover. I figure they are not moving much and just eating browse. It will be tough on them if this weather lasts on toward the end of March. As soon as this melts they will be in the fields in the middle of the day eating. It will also be time to watch for deer crossing roads. I'm sure a bunch more will get whacked by cars.

I saw my first deer tracks since the big snow this morning thru the yard.  Also saw a small herd in my neighbors back yard yesterday evening.  But she feeds them.

I've been thinking how a big snow affects other stuff, mainly rabbits.  Me and my son were going to go out rabbit hunting the last day, feb 6th, until this blizzard came.  I suppose they hole up when the weather gets bad, but can't see them getting out until this melts.  One week and counting, with no big thaw in site.  Wonder if they go into a semi hibernation, hopefully they don't all starve.  They are practically extinct as it is!

We've been pretty lucky so far up here. I'm 30 miles north of Williamsport, and we never even got so much as a cootie-coated snowflake on the storm that hit on Feb. 6 & 7. But on the one that went through on Tuesday/Wednesday (Feb. 9 & 10), we only got 3 inches of snow. Temperature remains in the 'teens and drops to the low single-digits overnite.

from what im hearing where i am at for school out in indiana pa. is not to back compared further east 5C area got in the 3ft area. indiana pa is about 26" but we keep getting that dang lake effect snow. good to hear from you guys was not sure if i was goign to get a responce. and as some of you guys voiced there is a little worrie for the smaller creatures like the phesants and rabbits with so much snow. another thought from the turkey hunting guys is that this might affect the birds too. talk about loos of beard due to them breaking off from ice and rubbing and such. but we will have to see i guess.

I have a friend who lives up near Indiana as he often talks of going into that town. I think he has well over 2' now and is expecting another 8" to 12" tonight and tomorrow. He says this is the most snow he's had since they moved to the farm and that was a bunch of years ago.

The turkeys are gonna take a huge hit up your way. Not so many years ago ya'll had another winter kinda like this with lots of snow and it lasted several months. Before that he had flocks of turkeys all over the place and the next couple years or so he saw few. They are not able to cope well with deep snow as they can't get down thru it to food. They don't last long without food. Your spring season this year you'll be lucky to see a gobbler much less call one in.

On the way home from work I pass by a place that a guy feeds turkeys. A couple of days ago I saw the most in his yard I had ever seen. There was a least 50 maybe as many as 75 birds in his yard. I guess with this much snow cover they will travel a good distance to find food.

thats pretty neat there graybeard i know you had put pictures up earlier he sent you of his kill of the year but did not know or negllected to see that he was in this area. yea there is alot of small pitched roofs caving in in the area. alot of people that is hear from are putting out supplemental food right now to help with some of the wild life to get some food intake but you don't think of them right away when it come to this the first thoughts are to your side walk, drive way and how deep and cold it is. mrloring i am not to sure of that picture i have seen that floating around the internet for a while. i could see something  simular going on around here for sure though.

I expect the snow is deep enough in some parts of PA for that but I think the photo is much older than the current snowfalls.

My friend lucked out this week as he was out clearing the paths again with his snow shovel a dozer came down his lane to go back to clear the trails to the gas wells on his land. He talked the dozer operator into clearing his lane all the way back to his FIL's place up on the hill above them. I think he said it had a 12' blade so he got a good job done on the lane which will help them greatly in getting around and maybe even help the game on the farm a bit as well.

He has been putting out corn up the lane from his house in a spot he has to pass daily going up to the farm to feed the cattle and chickens. He sends me photos of the deer feeding there as he has a trail cam out at that location. There is a doe and her two fawns that hang around there regularly but at times the trail cam has caught as many as six or seven deer there.

In his e-mail today he reported freezing rain last night and now it's snowing again. I'm sure glad it's not me living up there in all that snow and ice.

It's not so bad Gray Beard... You just have to dress for it and strap on the ski's. I love the snow!!!

I talked with a fella the other day that was 86 years old and he told me that he's never seen two huge storms so close together in all his years. The 40 degree temps are packing it some but we still have over a foot, covering anywhere you look. Graybeard, you are on to something about the turkeys. We had flocks of a dozzen or so birds in a couple different locations and now you don't see them anywhere. I don't know how far they'd travel for food but this year, they'd need to leave the county for something to peck at.
