rechamber/reamer questions
« on: February 19, 2010, 04:45:57 PM »
I plan to rechamber two barrels, a 357 mag to max, and a 30-30 to 30-30 AI. Which reamers do I rent (borrow, buy, steal)?  The finishing reamer?  I wouldn't think the roughing, but then I don't know squat, except to be very careful not to ream too deep. ???

finish reamers should work Use LOTS of cutting oil if your not using too much then it is not enough. NEVER turn a reamer backwards like you do a tap.

I like to mount the barrel verticley in the vise and place a catch pn under it to catch the oil/shavings.. Remove the reamer often to clean off chips, to avoid scratching the new chambers finish. Clean the chamber well before re-inserting the reamer. If using compressed air for either task be sure to remember eye protection as those flying chips can certainly ruin your eye. Since you're doing both rimmed cartridges simply cut until the rim recess that's already there is barely touched..headspace should be OK. I usually burnish/polish the newly cut chamber with steel wool on a rod spun with a drill motor to finish off such a project.

What kind of barrels are you gonna ream?  If you check in the NEF forum there is a .357 max reamer being passed around pretty cheap.

thanks!  I didn't know it was still in circulation.  I'll go back and re-read.
