Huntsman and Hornady make a nice couple!
« on: December 22, 2009, 04:07:07 PM »
I am hoping my photo attaching skills are up to the needs of this forum but just had to share this with you.

This is a 240GR HP/XTP recovered from a Manitoba white tail.  The load was 80gr of FFG 777 in my Huntsman 50 Cal. The 4x3 was shot about 1/2 inch off the spine between the shoulder blades at 70 yards as he had his head down feeding and facing me head on.  The bullet did not leave the chest cavity and the deer just dropped on the spot, not a bit of movement from him.  I have chronied the load at 1850 fps.  Here is the picture of the recovered bullet alongside it's original form...

If you like those you will love the 300 grain XTP.

Hey Bob, Great Shot and thanks for posting photo.  I use the same XTP but have never recovered one.

Nice Shot Bob!  Great recovery as well, good to see how well that bullet held together on a big one.

I also shoot XTP's, 250 grain HP in front of 100 gr of 777 pellets and get about 3 inch accuracy at 100 yards with my Sidekick, took a mature Minnesota Whitetail Doe with it at 135 paces two years ago, and it dropped her in her tracks.

Gotta love Hornady!

I can't for the life of me figure out what causes folks to shoot bullet that cost close to $1 a piece in a muzzleloader.  Now I know you can get the XTPs much cheaper, but most of the time those packs of XTPs with the sabot go for over $1 a piece.

Try some 240-300gr cast lead bullets in those sabots and you might just be pleasantly surprised.  My Sidekick & Huntsman both shoot the a 240gr cast just fine, as good as the aerotips, xtps and most everything else I could find.  Cast from wheelweights (11-14 BHN) they will expand, but who needs expansion on a .43" dia bullet - it's already .43"!!  Cast the bullet with a little linotype mixed in to make it harder (or buy most of the commercially cast bullets- they are usually harder) and you could shoot through most anything you hunt in North America.

I'm actually a little surprised that 240gr XTP stayed together at that velocity - got to be close to it's max velocity.

100 bullets for 25 bucks 50 sabots for 9 bucks for a total of 18 bucks   total for 100 shots 43 dollars  seems to me that is about 43 cents a shot.  I personally shoot a 44 cal round nose 250 grain bullet I mold myself.  I dount I am shooting much cheaper by the time I get the lead and pay to melt it the lube ot size them etc.

I can't for the life of me figure out why you would want to wrap a piece of plastic around a nice soft chunk of lead ;) Kurt
