OAL - 80 & 75 grain A Max in 223
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:03:18 AM »
Hi,

Kid asked me to load these for his AR15.  The OAL is limited on this gun to what will fit in the magazine, about 2.28".  At this length these two Hornady bullets are seated very deep with the case mouth up on the oglive a bit.  Any body shooting these in an AR?  Cut back the case mouth or what?

thanks

BB

Found the answer to my question, these rounds at proper length will not fit in an AR 15 mag.  Shoot them single shot or maybe someone makes a modified magazine to handle longer 223s?

Why be difficult, when with a little extra effort you can be impossible?

Reducing the case length will not effect bullet seating depth or over all cartridge length.  I load the 75 gr. bullets to magazine length for 200 and 300 yd rapid fire.  I use 80 gr. for the slow fire stage at 600 yds.  I load 80 gr. bullets with an over all cartridge length of 2.550".  At this length they must fed directly in the chamber.  If you choose to load 80 gr. bullets at magizine length, be sure to reduce the powder charge accordingly.

You really can't load these bullets to work through the magazine. I quote form the Hornady manual "(This bullet cannot be loaded to magazine length.)" They are used single shot only in the AR's for the slow fire 600 yard part of matches. It takes at least an 8" twist to stabilize these bullets also.

You CAN load the Hornady 75 BTHP and Sierra 75 BTHP to work through the magazine but they also need at least an 8" twist.

One more thing.  80 gr. 224 bullets require a 1-8 or 1-7 rate of twist to shoot well.  good luck.

Thanks for the info.  Talked to the kid and he is good with the single shot AR for these long projectiles.  Will load them accordingly.
