Israel army introduces new drone
(AFP) – 4 hours ago
JERUSALEM — A new drone that can remain airborne for more than 24 hours and reach as far as Iran was added Sunday to the Israeli air force's arsenal, the military said.
Described by the army as a "technological breakthrough" the Eitan -- which means strong in Hebrew -- is a Heron-TP type drone with a wingspan of 26 metres (85 feet), similar to that of the Boeing 737.
It is 24 metres (79 feet) long, weighs 4.5 tonnes and can remain in the air for more than 24 hours, enabling it to fly as far as Iran, Israel's arch-foe.
The drone was built by Israel Aerospace Industries in cooperation with the air force and is equipped with radar, cameras and high-tech electronic equipment including mapping devices.
The drone can reach an altitude of 13,000 metres (43,000 feet) and carry payloads of about one tonne.
"This aircraft constitutes a very important turning point in the development of unmanned aircraft," Air Force chief General Ido Nehustan was quoted as saying.

I guess drones are one way to prosecute a war, but they want to close Guantonomo Bay because it antagonizes the radicals. I think that bombs raining down at odd intervals would incite way more hate than a prison in Cuba. I'm not saying that we shouldn't use every tool available, I just can't stomach liberal logic.

If there really is such an aircraft, it sounds like it would be a pretty big target unless it is one stealthy SOB.

Shoot it down ? Now Israel is a country engulfed by those wishing to destory it . They have won every major war aginst them . Is it just me or do any of you also think that they may have considered others would try to shoot them down and built the thing to survive ?

My guess is it would be a stalking horse, to show the Israelis where the air defenses are so as to destroy them before the main attack.

They had to anounce something because people will see it flying around, and landing, during testing.  But as to the performance figures and limits, they only tell what they want you to hear or think.  The real figures will be kept secret, you can bet your bi-pi on that.

Well, I suppose they could say that it is loaded with an armed nuke and if Iran wants to shoot it down--well then it's on them.

In any case, I agree that the Israelis aren't stupid and they've probably got something clever in mind.
