Texas Hog Hunt
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:41:57 PM »
It's becoming almost a family tradition, my youngest son Cody and I went to the Langley Ranch the day after Christmas. This was our fourth year in a row to go hog hunting between Christmas and New Years.  This year my grandson Jacob joined us and had a big time.

Here's Jacob in the tree stand with his new BB gun

Jacob had to shoot grandpa's hog several more times, to make sure it was dead.

The red hog is mine, a 160# boar, Cody got the best hog again, a 185# boar with nice tusks.

I used my 1975 vintage Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with Federal 300 JHP ammo. A 25 yard high shoulder shot put the hog down and the bullet was found under the hide over the off side.  This was the second 45/70 I've had lately that didn't exit.

Cody used a Marlin 45/70 guide gun with the same ammo. He hit the boar right between the eyes at about 40 yards and it went down with all four feet in the air. Mr Langley went to get the mule (Kawasaki mule) but when he got back the boar was still thrashing around like crazy and required several more shots, Keith loads from a 44 magnum, to finish it. One tough ole boar!

Nice tusks on Cody's boar, he's probably going to mount this one.

Jacob provided back up and "coup de gras" shots with his new Daisy .177 caliber rifle.

I think that Jacob and Mr Joe are buddies now ...

You are blessed!!!!  I have daughters with no interest, nor is there anywhere convenient to hunt.  Hope I get hunting SILs and Grandkids someday.

Thanks, Cody is my youngest son and Jacob's uncle. He was home for Christmas from USAF pilot training, we don't get to spent a lot of time together, but try to make it count when we do.

warhawk:

I am interested in the place you have been hunting.
Since you keep going back, what is it that you like?
Are the owners VERY kid friendly?  Are the rooms clean and nice?

I am just looking for a place to take my 8 year old.  He has missed the entire hunting season this year.
I was diagnosed with skin caner.  It is hard for him to understand why we have not been able to hunt.
He has been a great help.  He is helping to get through this.  I want to suprise him with the hunt and
to spend some tme with him hunting.

The Langley's are just outstanding folks. I can't imagine a better place to have taken my grandson.

The camp house is nothing fancy, just an old farmhouse for folks to stay in. It's clean and you'll be the only ones there, the only ones hunting at the ranch and the only ones at the camp house. You will need to bring sleeping bags or bedding, and food.  There are a couple of fast food places in Centerville, and a couple of restaurants, but it's about 10 miles to Centerville from the ranch.

THe camp house has a big porch across the front and a nice view across the road. We've seen deer from there a couple of times. Mr Joe will have a camp fire going and he loves the kids. He was the Principal and football coach of the high school there, retired a few years ago. Mrs. Langley was also a school teacher.

They also have a pond, so bring some fishing tackle.

Book your hunt as soon as possible, they stay booked way in advance.

EDIT: Couple more things I thought of ... For $25 they will gut, skin and quarter your hog. Bring a big cooler and stop at the old country store where you turn off the blacktop for some ice. Stop at the store anyway, not many places like it left.

The ranch has two high fence areas to hunt. The larger area is across the road from the Langley's house, it's very thick and very tough hunting. There are some BIG hogs in there that are rarely seen.  I've hunted in there twice and have yet to get a decent shot at a hog there.  The smaller area is where we've always taken our hogs, the hogs in this area will run between 100 and 200 pounds, and there are usually some nice boars in there.

Mr Langley buys live trapped hogs and puts them into a pen for a while before releasing them into the hunting area. I don't know any details of how long, but he has little pigs in there, so I assume he lets they get up to 100 pounds or so before turning them out in the hunting area.  My grandson had a big time watching the hogs in the pen, they would charge at him and hit the fence.  Once he realized they couldn't get him, he would try to get the hogs to charge him and chase him up and down the fence.
