Contender barrel question
« on: December 05, 2003, 04:52:37 PM »
:? Hi All, a new member and a "newbie" question.  I have an offer to buy a SS 22LR "super Match" 14" barrel in "as new" condition for my Contender which was made in the mid 80's. Selling price for the barrel is $155.00 delivered. My question is how doe's a "super Match" barrel differ from a stock factory barrel and most importantly, will it fit my contender frame? I currently have 30-30 Rem, 10" and .223 -14" both are factory bbls. with a custom benchrest for end.  Would the "Super Barrel" also fit my current forend?  Should I buy it, I'd add a scope.  Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard! Yes your forarm should fit just fine. A barrel in "as new" condition would be a pretty good buy at $155. The difference between "match" barrels and std barrels is the chamber should be a little tighter. Not as much throat as a std barrel. It may not chamber all types of ammo. CCI Stingers are one that comes to mind because of the longer case body. I would not shy away from a match barrel because of this but you may have to be a little more picky about what ammo you put in it. I have a std barrel that will shoot 3/8" 50yd groups all day so don't think that a std barrel wont shoot as well. It probably will shoot better than most peoples abilities. Hope this helps,   KN

they will shoot great! like KN, my 22lr match barrel will shoot consistent 1/2" 5 shot groups at 50 yards with a couple ammo's. wolf match target(around$30/500)and federal american eagle 40gr solid(around $10/500). try different ammo to get best accuracy. thats the key to 22lr shooting. i mounted a 4x16 riflescope on my 14" barrel and like it really well. with little recoil, you can get away with the short eye relief.
14" barrels are called "super 14". 22lr's were made with standard chamber's, and match chambers(tighter tolerances). hence, the one you're looking at is the super 14 22lr match, if the barrel is marked that way. :D

I just added a 10 inch match chamber stainless steel barrel to my Contender.  Midsouth has them for $169, and I topped it with a 2.5-7 TC scope.  I am still breaking in the barrel, and wiggling in all the ring screws etc.  My first time out with the combo got a 2.5 inch group at 50 yards and it keeps getting better.

Is that a stainless barrel? Does the stainless fit on a blued frame?

the question comes up occaisonally, about interchangability.
blue and stainless are for the most part interchangable, some will work better or worse depending on the frame; gen I, II, III or even G2. split lugs easy open frames so on. the greatest concern is to watch out for Armour Alloy, this was a coated system that really only worked well together. fortunately for the swapping community this system wasn't long lived. I have heard that an AA bbl can be factory refinished to work on regular frames. just a side note bbls in question will be marked AA for Armour Alloy. this was a corrosion resistant coating to combat inclement weather..... because as we all know stainless steel can still rust as it is steel and contains (Fe) Iron. stainless is simply less likely to do so therefore called stain-LESS, due primarily to the inclusion of (Cr) Chromium.

That is what I have, and it works well.  My frame is an old blued frame and the .22 barrel is brand new and stainless.
