Rem. 6 1/2 SR primer for 22 Hornet
« on: January 01, 2010, 11:58:47 PM »
I have read that the remington 6 1/2 SR primer was primarily developed for the 22 Hornet.
Was wondering what others think of this or have used them and found them to be more accurate.
Or is this just hype? Your opinions please, thank you. TC

I do not know if the Rem 6 1/2 was developed for the 22 Hornet, but the Rem 7 1/2 was developed for the 17 Remington. This was because the Remington 6 1/2 was getting blown and cratered primers with this high pressure round. Since the 22 Hornet is not a high pressure round, it should be just fine for the ol' Hornet. The Remington 6 1/2 should be fine for any application where pressures are not going to exceed 45K - 50K psi. I would think the 6 1/2 would be better than the 7 1/2 in the 22 Hornet because the 7 1/2 has a hotter flame to it raising the pressures quickly. I have been shooting small pistol primers in my 22 Hornets with excellent results. When I tried to shoot magnum small pistol primers in them, I was getting over pressure loads with the same powder weight. This is my experience and opinion; I am sure you will get many others. I agree, I like them in a number of calibers!!  (I still have a brick or two ;D)

I just started shooting a 218 Bee in a Contender. I've tried CCI BR primers and Remy 6-1/2's, right now the 6-1/2's have the edge with all else being equal. Good thing, I'm almost out of the BR primers. I too have heard the 6-1/2 was developed for the Hornet and that's it's a very "soft" primer as far as its igniting power, hence it's use in the very small cases. I have some small pistol primers but havn't tried them yet.
The temperature here is in the 'teens, doesn't look like any load development this weekend.

I have been useing CCI small rifle primers in my Hornet, but wanted to try something else to see if accuracy improved.
Also use them in my 357 Max, don't have many left, wanted to save them.
Just got back from Cabela's, all they had were Rem. 6 1/2 SR primers, guess I will be trying them after all.
Got to get some loaded and get to the range when it warms up a little, now that deer season is over.

Thanks to everyone for your help and insight.

My results are just the opposite using IMR 4227 powder.  I get much better accuracy using CCI small rifle magnum primers over CCI small rifle primers.

I use IMR 4227 in a lot of rounds I load and almost always get better acurracy with CCI magnum primers.  But then again some other brand of standard primers might be as hot as a CCI magnum primer.  CCI is just all I have used for years and keep on using them since all my loads are develop for them.

I use Remington 7 1/2 Benchrest because I have a bunch of them. They do very well.
