Leg Holster or Shoulder Holster
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:12:07 PM »
well i am thinking about getting the Firepower® Tactical Leg Holster from sportsmanguide.com.  Well i would like to know what you think about the leg holster for hunting? i have the UTG Deluxe Universal Horizontal Shoulder Holster  in Army Digital Camo and i love the thing. It holds any gun i want(holds a target pistol and my USP co2) and can carry pepper spary and a cell phone in the mag pouches and will hold revolvers too. I use it a lot and it fell good to wear all day.  Even at a full run the holster keeps the pistol in it place and I never needed to be  readjust all day.  I'm 6' 0" @ 155 lbs. but this holster would surely fit someone much larger also. I have no problem drawing my gun with a back pack on with it and i just love it.

Anyways what are some of the pro and cons of a leg holster and do you think i should get it? It also fist many guns and some of the reviews i have seen it fits 6 shooter too.

drop - leg vs. shoulder: I prefer drop-leg for most things. Only shoulder for long barreled hunting pistols like TCs, Rugers, (and I actually prefer a crossdraw on the belt for those.) Reason why is body position - there's only one position in which I couldn't draw off a drop-leg. But a shoulder holster can be awkward in a lot of positions: prone, laying strong side, with a long gun ... if you're prone in a good position with a long gun, you have to shift your body and your point of aim to pull a handgun from shoulder holster. Not real comfortable using a shoulder rig sitting either - barrel invariable points at my body somewheres, and on a long barrel my drawing hand is parallel with my face before the barrel clears. REALLY do not like the shoulder rigs that point straight back - got flashed a bunch in Iraq by folks wearing those. Only muzzle I should be able to look down is the enemy's.

both look silly, let's face it. You either look like kojak or lara croft. a good high hip leather rig just looks good ... if you're sitting horse, walking or standing in an imposing manner like the Duke. ;D

jamaldog87,

I think that if it "fists" you, and you "wants" it, then you should "buys" it. It only 13 dolla, so this is plus, yes? ;)

oh ... before you buy, check out www.combatgearing.com or ebay. I just got a Maxpedition pack ($117) straight from the factory in Hong Kong ($30 shipped). They also make drop holsters in a variety of patterns and colors.

i have long arms and it hard for me to draw from a belt holster. I have a shoulder rig that point straight back.  I thinking about guns with 6'' or less barrels maybe a 4-5'' wheel gun.  I did have a western style holster and it had a hammer thong and rawhide leather leg tie. It rode very low and was easy to draw from. Liked it but i looking at something more newer and that cost less.

thanks i gave it a look and i just getting the Firepower® Tactical Leg Holster from sportsmanguide.com. It cost less then the Tactical Universal Modular Dropleg Pistol Holster they have and it's the same one also i like   Buckle Snap over a velcro closure strap. the UTG Deluxe Universal Horizontal Shoulder Holster  you can use the velcro closure strap or use the thumb break if you want more speed.

" More newer and costs less "

That combination doesnt always make it better , A good cross draw has been my prefference for a full size 1911 for alot of years. Carries fine at waist level, Can be drawn from the sitting position weither the sitting position is car, motorcycle , horse or ATV . It stays out of the way and can be had alot of times with quality for a $50 bill give or take.

Best thing to do is just get to a shop that carries a good selection of holster and get with the owner , be polite and straight forward and explain what you have ( weapon wise) and more times then not the guy will work with you , And you may find a rig you hadnt thought of that fits your and comfort level better then what you mentioned or that we all have mentioned ... but in the end the proof with be in the wearing and practicing from said holster.

I have a 7.5" barreled Ruger Super Black Hawk 44 mag with a straight forward strong side Hunters brand leather holster I found in a pawn shop for $10 , well My line of thinking was only $10 bucks , would be more accessable then toting it in my pack while hunting , But honestly I thought that weapon in that holster would be a god aweful pain in the ass to haul around all day in the mountains ... I was pleseantly surprised at how well it rode on my hip walking, climbing and riding the 4 wheeler. Its weight and position wasnt as bad as first expected.

So you never know till you try it is the point I was trying to make , Just remember you usually get what you pay for ... And that buying a good quality holster right out of the gate trumps 3 or 4 crappy hoslters in my book all day long. Besides should you pick up a nice Bianchi hoslter and find it doesnt float your boat then sell it to someone on here , recoupe some of your cash to go towards whatever you have your eye on next.

thanks but i have tryed many belt holster in the past. i found a very nice Bianchi hoslter it was a inside the waistband holster  but i could not draw from it and it would not fit any of my airguns. Try a Sidekick Ambidextrous Hip Holsters  still did not work.  the only holster that work for me are Horizontal Shoulder Holsters , cowboy holsters or a pocket holster.  the leg holster was kind of a bad buy but i will used it when i walking the woods.
