Non Taurus owner question?
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:29:13 AM »
I was thinking a model 66 .357 mag would be a nice gun to have, but do have some questions. First is, Is there a velocity limit on the ammo you can shoot out of it? I heard this but want to confirm this as rumor or truth.  The gun will fire some hunting loads, will it stand up to a lifetime of hunting loads? Also I target shoot and practice alot. Is the longevity of this gun a problem. Any other know issues with this gun? I am a ruger owner but i do not like the 6 inch GP100 and have not been able to find a 6 inch Security Six used anywhere. Smith and Wesson is out of my price range. Your opinions would be most helpful

I've had a taurus 66 and a 689. I know no "speed limits" with them. I've shot federal 180 castcore in mine with no ill effects. I wouldn't feed it non stop with them. I've shot high end 110 and 125 loads all day in mine. The taurus 357s are good pieces. imo.

There is no volocity limit! That's silly- what you are refering to is in some light framed revolvers in .357 mag, using very light bullets (high vel) can cause some gas cutting (with heavy use) of the strap on the frame due to high volumes of high pressure gas driving these light bullets to high velocity. Mid-weight bullets use less powder per load and don't have the problem. For occaxional use and self defence use of 110gr bullets is ok. For targets and high volume shooting use 158gr lead 38's

I'd check the owners manual.  I have a model 65, which is basically the same gun without an adjustable rear sight.  My owners manual clearly states a maximum of 1450 FPS with a 158 gr bullet. However, most factory loads are well within that limit so it's not really an issue unless you plan on shooting some super hot handloads or maybe Buffalo Bore.
