Misfire Question????
« on: February 27, 2010, 10:18:03 AM »
Hello everyone. This is my first post and earlier this week made my first purchase of a Handi-Rifle. My grandson had to have the one he's been eyeing down at the gunshop.....We read everything we could on this forum about making it accurate before shooting it.....Rubber O Ring attached, Made sure the latch and shelf was clean of any oil or solvent, put a set screw in the barrel lug to insure consistent forearm attachment, polished the chamber and the bore. I wanted the first range session with his new rifle to be a good experience . We were shooting Remington 130 core-lokt's to get started.....The experience wasn't what we expected....The rifle wouldn't fire....One time after three trys we got one to fire....I've read where you have to pull back and hold to insure proper firing pin operation....We did all that . In fact I tried about everything I could think and read about to make it work and nothing but clicks.....Is there anything I'm missing before sending it back?..To say the least , my grandson is not a happy camper, nor am I...I would appreciate all input.
Thanks, Zen

Is the firing pin hitting in the center of the primer?

Yes, the firing pin is hitting dead center....It locks up tight and everything appears fine... ???

Have you tried different ammo? When you push the shell in all the way is it flush or recessed?

The cartridge is recessed slightly....This is the only ammo I've tried so far. This could be a problem.

I've read where you have to pull back and hold to insure proper firing pin operation....

Well there is a little more than just that,,I had operator malfuntion of my trigger too,,meaning the trouble was ,,me.

Could be you have a notorius heavy trigger, and a slow squeeze (even with the hold) isn't working. From what I understand it's about the tranfer bar not dropping all the way to allow the firing pin too fully extend into the primer. You'll see a pin mark in the primer from a strike, but it's not hitting hard enough.

Try a qiuck, full and hard trigger pull, I don't want to advise "jerking" but if it works at least you've narrowed down the trouble. I know your  frustration, new guns are supposed to work,,not get sent back to the factory!!
Could be just a burr in there holding things up,,and it might come out if jerking the trigger works, if it does then put a fired case in there and "dry fire" a bunch
found elsewhere

Welcome! Remington ammo has a known history of problems with misfires, as was mentioned, excess headspace (recessed below the chamber face) will cause the issue. Remove the forend and see if the barrel is loose when the action is closed, if it is or the headspace is excess, it needs to go back to H&R for a new barrel, give them a call and make arrangements for them to repair it, ask them to cover shipping, toll free (866)776-9292. It could also be a defective transfer bar, you can check that easily by opening the action, pull the trigger all the way to the rear and hold it while holding the hammer and let it ease forward, with the trigger still held back, the firing pin should protrude from the breech face by at least .040", if it doesn't, there's a problem either with the pin or transfer bar or possibly the hammer.

Thanks everyone  for your advice. After checking everything mentioned I'm sure that the headspace is excess. A loaded cartridge is definately recessed. I put the one case that I got to fire back into the chamber and it was flush with the barrel.[fireformed]....The firing pin is protruding enough I believe....transfer bar seems to be OK....I'm going to send it back....It seems to me any factory ammo should work in any rifle...Reloads would fix the problem or maybe another factory load but that shouldn't be so...I tried a quick and hard trigger pull...That goes against everything that I've been teaching my grandson to do in shooting... If that's what it takes to shoot these rifles then I bought him the wrong one.

Thanks again...Zen

The trigger doesn't need to be jerked, it just requires good follow thru, instead of releasing the trigger when it breaks, it must be held to the rear, if the trigger is released at the break, the transfer bar will fall causing inconsistent pin strikes resulting in inaccuracy at the least and no fires at the worst, this is covered in the Handi Basics 101.  ;)

Having same issue with mine (.223),I did do trigger job on mine though only touched up with hard arkansas stone,  have ordered all new internals and wolf hammer spring, will put back to dismall factory trigger pull and see if problem is still there very frustrating but I refuse to give up, funny thing though is it will shoot about 6-10 rounds fine and then it will not light off the next 4 or 5 or more, tried jerking, squeezing with 2 fingers, firing pin protruding all the way out to 55 thousands so it has got to be with that dang transfer bar  ???
