Elk with 209x50!
« on: November 12, 2003, 05:43:51 AM »
I'm back from my first muzzleloader elk hunt. First, I want to thank all of you for your expert advice and feedback, it was all appreciated. I whacked a 6x6 bull that scored an unofficial 352+ inches! I hit him @ 200 yards with a 348 grain powerbelt in front of 150 grains of pyrodex pellets. The shot broke a shoulder, broke a rib, went through the aorta and lung and ended up against the far side ribs. The bull acted like he'd been hit by a freight train! He piled up in a ravine 40 yards from where he was hit. I recovered the bullet and it weighed 276 grains for 76% weight retention. It was perfectly mushroomed. Thanks again! Mike 8)

Hey congratulations. That is one big bull!!!

It's good to hear that you got such great performance out of your load at that range.

Chris,
I was using a T/C Encore with a Leupold 6x scope sighted 2" high @ 100 yards, 2" low @ 150 yards, and 10" low @ 200 yards. The elk was ranged at exactly 200 yards so I was confident with my shot placement. The bullet hit exactly where I wanted it to hit and did it's job. I had practiced with the rifle out to 200 yards and would not have taken a shot one yard past 200 yards. As the situation developed I realized there was no chance of a closer shot so I took the shot that was made available to me. Yes, I would take that shot again. Mike 8)

Mike,

I had the same type of performance from my powerbelt bullet on a 6 point whitetail this weekend. The deer was knocked off his feet and kicked about twice. It was a shoot through at 65 yards, using 90 grains of Clean Shot- 245 aero tipped powerbelt bullet with a knigjt big horn 50 cal.

Congratulations to you on your big elk!!!!!
