More Misfires

Can something be done about misfires, would wolff hammer spring help,can you get rid of transfer bar, have tried teaching myself to pull trigger differently,all the way back but this happens with multiple shooters of same gun, getting very frustrated with this rifle.

I feel your pain - I just bought my second handi and they both misfire when the hammer extensions are on. They fire 100% with the extension off but only fire about 20% with them on so I know it is the extra weight of the extension causing the problem. You would think that since they ship with the extensions that they would have a heavy enough spring to fire with them

Caliber is .223 maybe it could be hammer extension, never did it without extension but then again I only fired  it about 6 times before mounting scope.

Many folks are not used to pulling all the way thru with these rifles from the bench position...and as a result mis-fires do happen...I'm not saying this is the culprit all the time mind you. One very easy shooting tip you can try when shooting from the bench when the gun is in the bags or shooting platform is to simply only use 2 fingers to pull the trigger...Your index finger and thumb.Place your index finger on the trigger and your thumb behind the trigger guard  and squeeze trying to make them touch..The trick is to make sure they stay in the fired position and not let go once the gun is fired. Concentrate on trying to have them touch. For some who are transitioning from fully adjustable triggers found on bolt guns..this does help.

Hopefully it works in your case and it isn't a issue with the rifle itself

are you shooting milsurp ammo, factory ammo or handloads ??

This is probably the most unlikely reason, but I had a 243 that was misfireing about half the time. I finally noticed the indentation was off center,high, on the primer. I shimmed the hinge, and reseated the latch and the indents became centered and the gun always goes bang when I pull the trigger now.

I have a couple questions.

1) Are you shooting factory ammo?
2) Is it commercial or "military"?

If factory commercial ammo, Look at the firing pin protrusion. It should be .040 + -. If its less, the face of the hammer can be reduced to increase protrusion.

If the pin looks good then I will suggest the Wolff spring. Even with all other things OK the new spring is a good idea.

If your shooting hand loads and factory shoots OK look at your loads.

Its not uncommon for these misfires. Many times they are related to the spring itself. Brownells has the springs for about 7-8 bucks a piece.

Handloads,lake city brass, crimmed removed primer pocket uniformed, Had box of factory ammo with me but forgot I had it I will run box of factory through it before I get drastic this thing is misfiring 25% of the time, will also try finger thumb trick, other bolt rifles I own have light crisp triggers so it could be me but I tried to be concious of pulling all the way back

It could be a problem with the trigger itself too, 44 man had that exact problem, he replaced the hammer spring, didn't help, finally replaced the trigger and the problem went away, I suspect it had to do with wear on the trigger and/or the trigger extension which interfaces with the transfer bar. You didn't by chance do a trigger job on it, did you? That's been a known issue if it's too light, the transfer bar won't stay up so it can be in place to transfer the hammer impact to the firing pin.  You've always got the option of sending it to H&R for repair too, they can do a trigger job while it's there if it needs one.

I had a few misfires in one of my Handi's,and it was the hammer hitting my scope just alittle bit. Make sure your hammer is clearing the scope.  Digger

Yup, Quick said it.  I had a 30-30 bought by me used, (so unknown history) and it would occasionally misfire.  Then it got to where it would only ocassionally fire!  I tried a new hammer spring, new hammer, new t-bar lifter, all to no avail.  My old local gunsmith told me that 'if' someone had done a trigger job on the trigger, it could work in such a way that it wouldn't hold up the transfer bar properly.  He said you couldn't see it happen when you worked the action slow, but it would fail at 'real time'.  I finally bought a new trigger and the problem was solved.  Could be, just could be....   44 Man

Yes yes yes I confess , I did do a trigger job but only polished very carefull to not remove metal will try all suggestions if no avail I will order new internals or ship to H&r.   THANKS Tom

Don't worry.  At least the parts are cheap and easy to get from Brownell's.  Try it again, making sure you pull the trigger all the way back.  Mine got so bad I could only get it to fire if I 'shotgunned' the trigger, slapping it all the way back.  44 Man

Finally screwed with it so much I had to order new internal parts, wonderfully cheap I might add, problem is I will pprobably tinker with again I supposed that is part of the addiction you all have, beats the heck out of golf I suppose
