Savage 99

I have a 99E in 308.  I picked it up for $250 two years ago because it was shooting at best 4 to 5 inch groups with factory Remington 180's.  I pulled the bullets and reset to the max length the rotary mag would except.  Same everything else.  The groups shrank to under 2"  After some experimenting, I get around 1 1/2" with 150 and 180 grain weights.  In the last two years, it has taken 2 large buck and a doe.

You keep them clean and you can't beat them. I own about 15 of them and their the best rifle ever made.

 I bought a nice clean.308off an internet site very cheap as it had a cracked tang. Much to my suprise it will give 3/8 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yds. with any factoey or hand load I've tried in it.

The old-timers called the Savage 99 in 300Sav caliber a deer killing machine. A very popular rifle. I own one made in 1939.

If you have a 99 that is shooting a 3-4" group, you most likely have a fore end binding or a bad crown. The triggers can be brought down to 3 1/2 to 4#. Unless you are shooting grass rats, the .308 will be plenty accurate out to 300 yards.

I have four Mod 99's. A .250, .300, .243, and my .308 deer rifle with a $29 Simmons 6x42 scope. I shot my 2008 8-point at a measured 313yds. My 2009 8-point was about 80yds. Both were bang/flops. I am ashamed to say that I did not clean or even unload that rifle from one year to the next. It was just cased and then topped off with one cartridge from a Win 150gr White Box. In my opinion the Sav 99 is the absolute example of character in a great, hunt anywhere, deer rifle. Life is good.

  oldfort , not cleaning one 's  rifle is like not feeding one's dog.  shame...that is a beautiful rifle that deserves care and respect...I have three 99's...all are good shooters...the old .300 is the best...lets take good care of them.....

+1 on WCH. Illness is no excuse. Shame is the correct word. I would have never told it, but I was trying to prove a point on the quality of a 99. My rifle is unloaded, clean, and in the cabinet now after this years hunt. Good luck.

  sorry about the illness...glad to hear you rifle is now well cared for...have seen far more rifles ruined by negect than shooting...there will be no more original 99's....I like mine, but in this country they see limited use...but they are deadly....

   I bought a 99f in 308 about 5 years ago.  Like many of these old rifles it was abused and never cleaned well.  The safety was stiff and the triger heavy.  After being disasembled and cleaned it has a 3.5 lb trigger.  It shoots a clover leaf at 100 yrds with a 165 gr Sierra gk. at 2800fps with varget.  I found there was signifigant copper fowling in the barrel this alone could adversly efect the accuracy. Hoppes Benchrest and JB"s bore clean the bore looks great.
