I am considering buying a .270 encore in stainless steel for deer with factory loads (do not handload). I live in upstate NY, shotgun only, but they do allow pistols! Most shots would be 50-100 yards but there are several places where a 200 yard shot may present itself. Also, where can I find the best prices for this pistol. It seems that most shops around here sell the new frame for $300 and the new .270 SS barrel for $225, is that about right??
Are there any cons to this caliber for deer?

I use a 270 for deer and love it. It is a real flat shooter. I would buy the 140 grain. They are plenty to kill a deer and shoot pretty flat out to 200. Last years deer was 80 yards and dropped in its tracks so fast I thought I missed. The problem with the 270 in brush. If it is real thick where you are you may want to look into 308. I have one of those too.

What is the diffence between the .270 and .308 in brush? I was thinking that the .308 may be a bit "overkill" and was told that there is considerable more recoil with the .308. Since I have never fired either the .270 or .308 how is the recoil in each? I have fired the Contender in 35 Remington and found that recoil to be fine. If you had to pick only one, the .270 or .308 which would you choose and why.

It really wont matter what you use if you hit brush. there isnt a caliber out there that the bullet would not deflect. But as far as caliber goes, I have both the 7M-08 and the 308. Out of a pistol barrel you will not burn the powder efficiently out of either nor the 270. I would probably go with the 7M-08 just because of the lesser recoil. I can't say much about the 270 as I have never used one. You can find 7m-08 in any Walmart type store and most decent sporting goods stores. But your selection of bullets (factory) will definitely be better in the 308 if you are not going to order them from a Cabelas etc... For price, I would also go with Ed's. I have not seen better prices than his and have only heard good reports about his service.

i hunted with a .270 browning a-bolt for most of my deer hunting life. it's a great caliber for deer at short, or long range. i'd guess it would be ok in handgun form, but havn't tried it.
i have a 15" 7-08 that is sweet as pie :grin: i prefer the shorter case of the 7-08, and it's very comparable to the .270 balistic wise. i think the 7-08 is ideal(as are some others) for a powerful deer cartridge in the encore. recoil is very tolerable, and it shoots great. there should be a good selection of 7-08 factory loads out there. i have only shot the 120gr rem hp factory load in mine, and it gives acceptable deer accuracy. not nearly as accurate as my reloads, but acceptable for a factory load out of a handgun.
check out cknight's recomendation of ed's contenders. he's likely to have good prices, and possibly one used for less.
look into some good optics, and mounts to put on top of that thing. i prefer a burris 2x7x32(wide field of view), or 3x12x32(great for target work). i also like the burris dual dovetail base and burris signature rings to mount with.
for comparison,at a local shop here, i can buy a new blued 15" encore complete for $450 plus tax. of course stainless would be higher.

I bought a used Encore that came with a 15" .270 Win barrel. The only factory load I ever chrono'd was the Hornady "Light Magnum" load that had a 140 gr bullet, it was 2600 FPS. The muzzle blast & flash is pretty significant, I would go with the 7/08 if I had to do it over.
The prices you mentioned seem reasonable for a SS setup.

You cant tell me that a .3 180 grain bullet isn't better in brush than a .270 130. Yes they all will deflect but the bigger bullet will be effected less. Would you agree?

i read an article a good while back in a popular shooting magazine about that exact thing. ALL tested calibers and bullets were deflected to some degree, irregardless of bullet weight/size. the biggest factor was how far away from the target, till the bullet impacted, or how the bullet impacted the wooden dowels before reaching the target. a .308 180gr bullet is built for bigger game, not bigger brush.
thats just my opinion, and a 180gr bullet will be fine, if thats what you want to use. i'd just prefer something else.

ABSOLUTELY! YOU CANNOT BEAT A 12GA. DEER SLUG FOR HEAVY BRUSH AND EVEN THEY CAN AND WILL DEFLECT. the only way to do it is to create shooting lanes, or get in right above them. THATS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE. T.C.

All this talk of brush gave me some bad luck. I missed a nice deer this weekend. When I sat back down and inspected my shooting lane I noticed a 3/4 inch twig that was snapped off. It was exactly in line where I shot only. Moral of the story is brush is bad.

Well, If I was a bettin man I'd say those of you that say go 7-08 haven't used the 15" 270 Encore. Myself, I have never used the 7-08 so I will not bash it. I love my .270 15" Encore. In fact I killed a doe with it at 50 yards using 130gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips just this morning. It knocked her down, she got back up and fell over 20 yards further and that was that. I have always had great accuracy out of my 270 barrel. I have it topped with a 4x Leupold M8 EER. If I've been practicing I can regulary hit a milk jug at 150 yards with it off hand. Recoil is minimal! It's a pussycat really. Plus, if you don't reload I KNOW you can find 270 ammo almost anywhere. You cannot 7-08, even at Walmart. At least not here in Indiana.
