Saving money on fly tying materials
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:53:10 AM »
I learned a long time ago and then forgot, and came to me again recently as I was passing by a craft shop.  Amazing how much cheaper "stuff" is in a craft shop than it is in a fly shop.  You have to be careful, because some of the stuff looks the same at a glance, but isn't.  Beads, for instance, are sometimes glass or plastic instead of metal, but, even then sometimes a glass one will work too...realize the weight difference.  But they're also like $2.00 for a bag of 250, compare that at Orvis.

Yep! Its nice to have the convenience of a fly shop with everything in one place, but you do pay for it. I just picked up several sheets of colored foam at a craft store for a fraction of what I pay at fly shops. You'll also find things at craft stores that get your imagination working on new patterns. At Wally World today in the sewing/craft dept, I found a yarn called Fun Fur that I'm going to play with. I'm not sure what I'll tie with it yet, but it looks interesting.

Yeah....now Fun Fur sounds kinda kinky....I'll have to look for that.  I also remember getting several good scoldin's when I was young fer raiding momma's sewing basket and from daddy for chasin' the chickens(you didn't have to catch'em....just make'em fly around the pen some and they'd shed some feathers)He..He!!!

yup, i was collecting materials when i was a kid like no one's business.  i had squat for money and my first 'vise' was a pair of my dad's vise grips; and i was raiding mom's thread and getting chewed for that.  oh the collection of dead animals i had.  from feathers to fur, i had a little bit of everything.   hackles were hard to come by, and years ago i bought a bunch of capes from india, and used them for years.   recently i pulled the trigger and bought some metz capes, and oh what a difference that makes.
i am still always on the lookout for materials.  i went to fix a guys phone one day, and walked out with a bucket full of pheasent tails and other desireable feathers.  when i pass a squirrel on the road, the cable cutters collects it's tail.  definately visit the craft store, although by the time my kids finish picking out things, there is no money saved but it is great to see them use their imaginations to creat things.

Some of the stuff I "created" back then might not pass the Orvis test but I don't remember that it bothered me at the time and the 'gills in the neighbors pond didn't seem to have any objections either.   Now that I think about it, a lot of what I use today might not pass either, but I just try to lay'em out there and let the fish decide.
