6.5 mm barrel quandry

Well after much adue - I'm ready to purchase my next Contender G2 barrel.I've done the research,gotten the prices etc...
 I've decided on the 14inch 6.5JDJ or the 6.5x225imp and not going have rest in my @$$ until it's here. Alot of you here already have the wildcat and barrel mfg.knowledge-----Which barrel would you choose---MGM,Vanhorn or another ?   I'm open to your opinions/reasons etc...   Thanks in advance. Shane

      A true 6.5JDJ can only be obtained from SSK.  Having one for 'bout 20 years now, I highly reccomend it.

Yep, you don't REALLY have a 6.5JDJ barrel unless SSK made it.   ;)

Let me give you something else to think about. 225 Winchester cases are getting harder to find. 30-30 cases are cheap and easy to find. MGM makes a 6.5-30-30. MGM makes good barrels. You can get a SS Shilen 14" from them for about $280 plus shipping. Blue barrels are about $25.00 less.

Ahhh,I've got the 7x30 waters using the .30-.30 cases , I just have that "gotta fill the void" feeling and the 6.5 is that void. I saw this quandry coming and found .225 cases new in old Win. boxes so I bought 3 boxes..... got that part covered.I also load 6.5x55 swede so lead isn't a problem either. Just one of those "don't need it-gotta have it" things. Also upon checking the balistics on this little puppy-I just gotta see how one shoots for myself.   Shane

Either MGM or SSK.
I would tend to go with MGM myself.
A quality barrel is a quality barrel and the same can be said of the chambering.

My advice to you is use who you want, and get what you want.

Save some money, get a 6.5X225IMP made from MGM. Even if you go SSK you will not be sorry.

I love my 14" SSK 6.5JDJ.



I also love my 20" OTT 6.5X225IMP(aka 6.5JDJ). The same SSK 6.5JDJ dies load both. There is no difference between the two other than the builder. I took a doe this past season well over 300yds with a Nosler 120gr. B-Tip.

 I've got a couple of JDJ's barrels. The 6.5 is super accurate, mild recoiling, but hard on the ears(ported)! I have cases that have been reloaded 10 times and can STILL be used. 300 yards ground hogs are really easy to hit with a solid rest and 2.5x8 Leupold scope. Funny thing, the 120 grainers are twice as accurate as the 85's in  my gun! The 85's go into an INCH at 100 yards!!

Another thing that's got me tied is that I've been told that Vanhorn fits each barrel to the given frame that it's being ordered for(then shoots that gun ensuring perfect function)-the others are "just" a generic fit that well:"Ya get what Ya paid for"   Whadya all think about this ??  Still open for opinions everyone..... Shane

I've never heard that but that dosen't make it untrue. Now I would think that with wear on reamers and tools when TC makes a frame there is a variance of + or - on hole size, same said for the barrel and also the pin. This would to me explain the differences in frame gap from different setups. And I,m sure there is a lot more comes to play here also. Like maybe the location of the pin holes allowing + or - . My thoughts are this, if the barrel was matched for a perfect fit to your frame would there not be frames it would'nt work with?

I own barrels from all the above mentioned makers and all are quality built, great shooting barrels. Some cost more than others some take longer to build your barrel than others, but any of them would be a good choice!

   I have a Van Horn 6.5X225 and it is the most accurate centerfire I own. A 6mm TCU by Bullburry is right there with it, as is a 308 by that guy that cant be mentioned here.  The Van Horn is a 15" barrel and can do 1/2" groups at 100 yards if I do my part.  That said it shoots best with 120's. I have 3 barrel from VanHorn 2 are excellent the 3'rd was very good, I would feel comfortable with anything from them. 
     If I really had to cut down my Contender barrels to a bare minnum I would keep my 22LR match 14" factory barrel., the 45-70 12" by JDJ and my 6.5X225 15" by VanHorn.  I could do everything you can do with a single shot with that trio.

I have to second the Van Horn quality. . .it is very good. . .if you have enough time to wait.  I waited over two years for a 6BR from Van Horn and I still had to drive to his shop to pick it up with the forend unfinished (I had to finish it myself, he still wasn't done).

Your best bet is probably MGM or SSK for price and quality - I know about SSK personally, I have a 6.5 JDJ that is a tack driver.
