Author Topic: Adjusting Anschutz Model 54 Trigger (Read 3078 times)

Hey everyone-
I recently arrived at Michigan Tech and have recently joined the Rifle Team. I shoot an Anschutz Model 54, which, though quite old, is very nice and still shoots excellent. It's not exactly mine, even though it might as well be. It has everything except an adjustable cheekpiece and I am getting close to getting the settings down for every position.
However as suggested by my the title of the post, it's trigger leaves something to be desired. The first time I pulled it I thought there was something wrong with it, but it is perfectly safe. There is a bit of creep, and even though I have not measured it, I would say it breaks at at least 1.5 lb. I know this is way too heavy for a smallbore target rifle, and have been told so by many people. I believe this is hurting my scores, but I have no clue how to fix it. Any advice/instructions/websites anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may have -- probably do -- a trigger older than those shown on the current website. On an older 54 you would likely have a trigger similar to what is current issue for the 64.
There is a cam in the trigger that controls geometry and a spring that can be changed out for weight of pull and stage balance. The screw on the side (assuming that the type you have is the one I'd expect) will adjust sear engagement.
One of the most knowledgeable people around ref those older Anschutz rifles is Neal Stepp at International Shooters Services in Ft Worth, TX.
Phone him at 817-595-2090 (he's sometimes hard to get on the phone) or email him at iss@concentric.net and I expect that he'll be able to help you solve the problem. He generally carries in stock both cams and springs of the correct types. You may have to send him the trigger unit...

Just found out that I'm probably wrong. (Never happened before!) :eek:

Spoke with Neall today and found out the older 54s had a dedicated trigger. Call ISS and talk to him. There are options from parts swapping to a replacement trigger. (Anschutz apparently recognized the older trigger shortcomings and produced an updated unit that will fit the older style action.)

Nomad-
Although I do desire to increase the quality of my trigger, I am afraid that modifying the gun is out of the question. While I do work as hard as I can for the club to get money for stuff, I'm afraid neither the club or I has the money to send the trigger out. I was thinking more along the lines of adjusting it, and I would like to have the gun with me to do this. Seeing as how I'm on Thanksgiving break right now, I will have to wait until I get back up to the UP to call this Neall guy and see if we can get it lightened up. Thanks for all your help, though, with my problem. I never cease to be amazed by the problems that can be solved by posting on here.
