Serial numbers question

I just picked up a Handi whose barrel and receiver have the same 4 numbers stamped on them.  Does that mean the factory installed that barrel on that frame? The reason I ask is because I had originally thought it was pieced together, there's some sideways slop in the way the barrel fits.  I will shoot it before proceeding with any other thoughts but.....if it doesn't shoot well, can I send it back and expect them to fix it?

Anyone can mark the underlug with the serial numbers, H&R has always just marked the last three on the underlug tho, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a factory fitted barrel, but it also doesn't mean it's not a factory fitted barrel because it's loose, sometimes that happens, specially if it's been shot a lot and not lubed, or hot loads have set the underlug back or was just fitted poorly to begin with. They'll know when you call and ask tho.  I'd make sure it's on an SB2 frame depending on the chambering since there are 4 digits marked on the underlug, that in itself is suspicious.

Remington stamped the last four frame numbers on the lug of the barrel that they recently fitted for me.

That's good to know, I haven't seen an Ilion produced barrel yet, I'll have to add that to the FAQs, I've been going the other way selling some duplicate chamberings.

  It is a 2005-made SB2 frame with a .357 Mag barrel on it. Were they doing that then? It has not been shot a whole lot, but it has been a Maxi for a while.

I also atteched a note to the stock that they please  fit the barrel tight with NO side play & the lock up on that new barrel was solid as a bank vault.  I am very please.

Dinny, it could be an Ilion fitted accessory barrel, but I've never seen 4 digits on an underlug, if they've done it, it's news to me, anyone else seen it on a pre-Remington barrel?

  Have you known the .357 MAG to be factory produced on a SB2 frame since 2005?  If not, that would definitely lead me to think it has to be a barrel accesory program job.

Yes, Gander or someone was selling them on SB2 frames in 2007/2008, and they've always been available as an accessory barrel, they always had sights, if it's only drilled and tapped for a scope base, it's a late 2008 or later accessory barrel.

No sights at all. That answers that. I will shoot it next weekend and go from there.
