SB-1 or SB-2 receiver for .357 Max
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:53:05 AM »
Well, what can I say. The itch is in for a new project. And, having a dear affection for the .35 caliber I guess is only logical I build myself a Handy chambered for the .35 Rem Max. I could buy  a new handy in .357 Mag and ream it but it comes with a SB-1 receiver. Would I be better off getting a SB-2 receiver and build up from there. What do you folks think ????

Thanks.

Although it is safe to shoot the .357 Mag on an SB1 reciever the general consensus is you should use an SB2 reciever for a .357 Max. Another question is where does that leave the .360 DW? Can you safely shoot a .360 DW on an SB1 or should you use an SB2? I would like to hear from others on this as well....<><....:)

There are several members that have rechambered their SB1 357mags to Max, the only problem mentioned so far are primer issues due to the larger firing pin, if that's not an issue, you're good to go, if it is, change primers.  ;)

I put both of mine on SB2 frames, largely because I feel better about it that way.  I now have all my centerfire rifles on SB2 frames and I don't have to worry about mixing them up.

My maxi is a factory original model 158. Small firing pin.

I had the barrel on a different receiver for a while but for the past year or so its back on its orig frame. my loads are just below book maximums and I have had no problems to date.

I load AA1680 Powder and a Hornady 180 SSP bullet.

FYI, when I first got my 357Max barrel about 6yrs ago, it came with an SB1 TDC frame that the previous owner had used it on with no problems, I was using Dan Wesson factory ammo, got perforated primers on about 6 out of 10 shots, switched to an SB2 frame and had no problems, so it just depends on your load or more specifically, the primers used in those loads.  ;)

WoW, this thread got buried pretty fast. Thanks a lot for the replies. I wonder if using small rifle primers in the max would take care of the primer piercing issues. Has anyone ever try that?

It seems using a SB-2 would be the way to go.  I wish I can be patient enough to wait for one to be available.  :'( I guess I am going to be visiting a few pawn shops this week end.  :P

Thanks Again

The current .357 Mag is on a SB1 frame that has a small dia. firing pin.  I'm using it for my .357 Max conversion.

I always use SR primers in my maxi loads.... never had a pierced primer, actually its not common. But the primer flowing back around the bigger firing pin can happen.

Another fix is to bush the firing pin hole . The old time real gunsmiths did this on a regular basis to repair the old single shot rifles to repair the same problem. Check out Frank Dehaus's book (Spelling of last name?)they made a bushing with a small flange, cut the firing pin hole out , pressed the bushing in and no more slack in the pin! Many old rifles were repaired this way and improved accuracy by more constant strikes on the primer.
