4-H shotgun sports
« on: February 04, 2010, 03:49:05 PM »
My 10 year old son is wanting to get into 4-H shotgun sports. We do a lot of shooting just not much shotgun. He has done some clay shooting and surprisingly has done quite well for being inexperianced. Do any of your sons, daughters or grandsons and grand daughters do 4-H? Just looking for some insight and advice. He does not have a shotgun, I was looking at a 20 ga. Remingtion 870 express compact. Something he could grow into use for an extended amount of time and use for upland bird also. Is this a good line of thinking? What other thoughts might you guys have?

Thanks

I'm one of the 4-H trap shooting coaches here in my home town.  Contact your County Ag Agent to find the nearest program.  As far as which gun to get someone started with...Remington's 1100 seems to be the lightest recoiling in our experience although most of our youngsters are using pump actions and over unders.  I loan out my recoil reducer to the O/U users.  Recoil reducers are avaiable for pump guns too.  I hope you find a program nearby.
Never said I didn''t know how to use one.

We do have a local club. Acutally after contacting extenstion office my county has 13 clubs. I guess I will go with the 870 compact. My son also likes the H&R topper in 20ga. I am just not sure on the single shot and how long before he will want a pump or auto. It is a nice gun and fits him well but I think I will still spend a few extra dollars and go with the 870.

I'm told those Toppers kick quite hard due to being light weight and the configuration of the stock.  The 870 is much more versatile.  Hope you both have fun at the trap range!
