"Albany- As of March 17 2010 airguns became legal weapons for smallgame hunting in New York. The state DEC put new regulations in place last month that will result in many airguns being considered firearms under state conservation law.Airguns that shoot .177 and .22 caliber pellets and bb's at velocities of 600 FPS or more can be used for small game hunting of any species where rimfire firearms are legal, said Gordon Batchelder, the DEC biologist who headed the rulemaking process. That includes grouse, squirrel, rabbits, and raccoons. They MAY NOT be used to hunt waterfowl, pheasants or turkeys. The new rules will be published in the new regulation guides coming out later this year but now the airguns will also be legal for woodchuck and spring bullfrog hunting as well.As of now there are NO plans to allow airguns for big game hunting"
