Should I be all over this like a bad habit?
On a local board, a member is selling a Marlin 1895G (45-70) w/Leupy base and rings.
Marlin 1895G Guide Gun. Its Blue/Walnut, 18.5" ported barrel - 45-70 $500
I have heard conplaints of new Marlins on quality. This appears to be 10-12 years old with 150 rounds down range.

I think it's a tad spendy, but they've been bringing better money the last year or so, so it may be "ok", especially if you like it.

I liked my ported GG well enough, and it was plenty accurate - but I eventually tired of it, getting a 22" M1895 Sporter instead.

$500.00 is about the going price for a used one. They are good guns, not many complaints on that model. Porting is no longer available, collector plus. I have that model and really do like it, mine is a .450. If you really want it, go for it. It is not a steal, but you are not getting burnt at all.

The new blued ones are going for 590.00 around here, sounds like you may get one that is just starting to get broke in.  DP

I gave $500 for a M model 2 yrs. ago. It was in superb condition, the shop owner thought it was a raffle gun that someone just traded for something else. I had started my quest looking for a G model but got impatient. In the end this gun is fine and dandy by me. No doubt there are better deals out there but $500 sounds like a fair price. If you are actively searching $100 of gas can be burned fairly fast.

New 1895's can be found on gunsamerica.com for $500 and change all the time. I'd use this as a guideline unless you prefer an older model over a new one.

one thing about that ported barrel, and the reason I got rid of mine for the cb is it is LOUD!!!!

The newer Guide guns are not ported, but my 444P is and yes, the darn thing is very loud to anyone around you.  DP

Well locally you can get them on the front range for 575 brand new. But, that doesn include the base and rings. I opted for the regular 1895 because the regular one is already short and handy. Anyway, I'd think it isnt too bad of a deal. My brand new one made in 09 is actually very well finished and shoots nicely. My only complaint is that the hood on the front site seems a bit loose. EJ
