OK, golf ball bore.  With a golf ball?  How much powder?

How do I know? that is the question.

Has anyone measured speed of a golf ball size cannon.
Whether it is with golf ball, lead or steel shot does not matter.

I have a Napoleon in 1-7/8 bore.  Tried a good load with several golf-balls (needed some mass to build enough pressure (bang not poof).  I tried estimating the velocity by timing bang to impact time and averaging the distance.  Too fast.  Need a chronograph.

Average velocities with a mortar are easier with 8-10 second air times.

I have measured the followinf velocities:

Cannon                        Powder       Grains        Projectile         fps

Parrett                         Cannon       400            Golfball           620
French 75                    Cannon       400             Golfball          787
Mountain Howitzer        Cannon       300            Beer Can         305
Mortar                            fg             220            Golfball           320

The fps are averages of 10 shots

well done parrot , that list would run to infinity if you factored in all the possible loads........why the original question was so huge in scope.  Everything matters.

7000 grains per pound which gives 437.5 grains per ounce avoirdupois.
