6.5x 357 Maxi
« on: April 04, 2010, 04:34:26 PM »
Since I am in lust with the 6.5 bore size,  looks to me like I should be able to equal the 6.5 Grendel , with a rimed case.Looks to me like the 22 Hornet barrel will clean up.  any thoughts    pro/con   Doug

 ???

How are you planning on taking a .22 Hornet barrel to a 6.5 Rem Max?

I think a starting point could be the 256 Win mag, that was a 357 Mag case necked to .257 and 60 grain bullets were used.
I think necking that up may be easier and using the smaller 6.5 bullets (in grains) may be 100 grains or smaller.
other ideas may be easier.
necking down 7mm TCU (7mm X 223) and using the loading data from that.
Necking up 6mm SAW (243 X 223) and using the loading data from it.  (I thought either one would be a great 150 yard deer gun out of a Cz 527.)
There is also 6.5 Whisper (6.5X 221 Fireball) Using the loading data from that to see if it is what you want.
I think there is even a 44 mag or special to 6.5 out there but it excapes me.  The 44 mag case should hold about the same or slightly  powder as the 357 Max and be a lot easier to get.
Also the 6.5 Gendel is a 6mm PPC case just necked up to 6.5mm (22 PPC and 6 PPC are necked down versions of 7.62X39)
You can even look to take 270 Wren (22 hornet blown out to .270 and make it a .264 with either a slight taper or small shoulder)
The other question is what are you trying to use it in?
Short bolt action?  Ruger M77/22 Hornet or 77/44 mag ( I guess that one is out as the 6.5 X 357 Max would have an OAL longer than the action)
Micro Mauser Action like the Cz 527?  and are worried about pressure or Over all Ctg length?
Do you have a few hundres 357 Max cases you are not sure what to do with?
If this is for a single shot.  Just make either a 6.5X55 Swede or 260 Rem and down load to the 6.5 grendel levels.

I am just about finished building a Rem 700 in 6.5 TCU, it will be just a little bigger than what you have in mind but pretty much the same thing.  You could use the 6.5 TCU dies and cut them off the right amount to work with the Max case. Then run the TCU reamer in short, single point a rim cut, and you're in business. You may need a TCU form 'n' trim die to neck down the cases if they buckle from the full length sizer.

Doug,
I like the idea! For reaming and re-chambering, I think a 22Hornet Handi barrel will work just fine or even a .223 Rem barrel. Any idea on a shoulder angle? What about dies and such? Any way that the body a of 357 Max die could be used with different internals?

Please keep us posted.

Thanks, Dinny

Building one off the Max case would cool. A 6.5 x 30-30 Improved is a also a great round with a proven track record.
