20 Gauge H&R Extended Turkey Choke Tube
« on: March 08, 2010, 10:44:44 AM »
I purchased a 20 Gauge Vent Rib barrel with screw in choke tubes back in the summer and had it factory fitted by H&R.  I asked for an extended turkey choke which I got.  Just getting around to preparing the gun for the upcoming turkey season for the boy and notice on the choke was written "No Steel".  It did not say "Lead Only".  Wondering about the ability of the choke tube to handle HeviShot or other alloy shot types.  I'm guessing that I should stick to lead, but wanted to bounce this off of the internet experts on this sight first.  Really wanted to use HeviShot and would like to avoid buying another tube.  Thanks in advance for your opinion/thoughts.

I had a winchester 1300 12ga that hevi shot patterned real well with the full choke, when I went x-full turkey choke the pattern started to open up.

30-30                    223 stainless steel   20ga TDC

don't do it, it will weaken the choke and eventually you will have a catastrophic failure.

those guns are threaded for winchester/weatherby/mossberg chokes, so you should have no problem finding another choke.

if you want to shoot hevi 13 then check out the Cabelas Hevi Shot choke tube, there only $30 and people have been getting good results from them. heres the link

good luck, Zack

Thanks guys.  That's what I was thinking but wanted to make sure.  Bought some lead shot for now.  If the patterning doesn't go well, then I'll look into another choke tube taylored for alloy shot.

I shoot Federal Flitecontrol Heavyweight thru my 20ga TDC barrel, patterns are excellent at 40yds thru an extended full choke.  ;)

Pattern your gun. Turkey is just as dead when shot either 7 1/2 dove loads or 3" #4's. Make sure you can get a good pattern and set your limit. Truglo makes chokes that are Hevi-shot safe. This is what I use but have never shot Hevishot. I think I will try a box before 2011 turkey season. (Done bought the tried and true Nitros for 2010)

Hope to get in some patterning this weekend, unless we get rained out.  My son, age 9, will be using this for his second spring turkey season.  Borrowed a 20 gauge last year.  Range will be 25 yards max.  Hope it puts out a decent pattern.

I don't think I have ever shot anything that wouldn't kill one at 25 yards. I killed one with my 410 single with 3" #6's just to say that I had and he was 28 steps where he stopped flopping.
