what do i have? Dan wesson 44 mag...
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:17:04 AM »

i just picked up a beater dan wesson 44 mag with 6" vent rib barrel
on the barrel it says "dan wesson 44 mag ctg." or something along those lines. can anyone tell me anything about that particular gun? that is the only markings i can find on the gun other than the serial number and their location stamp on the receiver.

id like to get a holster and some grips for it. also, a refinish is in order..  ::)

its the one on top... :D

Since this has not been mentioned; check the base of the vent rib just at the rear of the front sight. You may find two small oval shaped holes. If you do find them, see if the barrel has a ring of holes about an inch from the muzzle. The factory says that you should not use cast as there is a chance the holes could strip lead from the bullets and become plugged.
My 44 came with a ported and nonported barrel when I bought it new in 1979/80.
There are other threads in here as well about the porting system if you search. I think it does work to some extent; but not as well as a heavy scope and base. :)

The holes are there but there are no ports, unless they are already plugged! :o
