Question on .22 ammo
« on: March 01, 2010, 05:40:07 AM »
I am mostly a centerfire varmit hunter but recently broke out an old 39-A and loved on it for a while.  I am interested in what is the most accurate round.
Any comments on the spitfire ammo.  Suggestions appreciated.

Unfortunately there is no set answer as each gun is different, each likes different brands and types.  I would start with a one box of each sampler of 3-4 types on my first trip to the range and see what groups best on paper.  The high velocity stuff is generally not as accurate as the 40 grain target.

That has generally been my experience, but every now and then there are exceptions, so try everything until you are happy with the groups.  If you are shooting varmints, consider that a Stinger that groups 1" at 50 yds. instead of 1/2" from target ammo will work out very well for you.  I do admit that the small groups are very gratifying, as is putting dopwn the critters.

If your looking for relitavely cheap ammo try the Remington Subsonics. They have done very well in several of my .22`s includeing a 39A. Excellant squirrel hunting round as they are very quiet as compaired to the high velocity rounds.

My un-modified 10/22 likes CCI #0056 subsonics best for accuracy, when I can find them.

I'm not sure what Remington gets for Subsonics, but the last time I bought them they weren't cheap.  I have had some pretty good groups with Federal Lightning solids at WalMart.  I've gotten <5/8" groups at 50 yd. from my Savage 24 with the Federals.  Winchester Super Speed 40 gr. also has shot well, and I actually got a 3-shot, 5/16" group with my ancient Stevens Crackshot.  I stopped at 3 shots because I didn't want to push my luck.  I've had several 1/2" groups with it, so I know it wasn't a fluke.

I just bought the big box (brick?) of remington subsonics for $28. It figured out to $.o6 per round. they seem to work decent in my 597, but i love how quiet they are.

 Yup. I've had the same experience. Never had a single dud or squib, and it shoots pretty much to the same point of aim from brick to brick in all of the rifles I've tried it in over the ~8 years I've been buying it. Very consistent stuff and reasonably priced (as far as target ammo goes).

As already stated you need to try different types. That said my 39A was made in 76 and it loves stingers. The only thing that shoots better and just barely is Ely target. With stingers I have had  five shot 1/2" groups at 50 yds. using a 4X Weaver on bags.

Most guns like a little diffrent stuff, kinda like people. But most men usally agree when a really pretty woman (cci) walks in.

Between my 2 sons and I we have 16 22's and all like the cci mini mags, as well as federal american eagle. They both cycle reliably, and are both extremely accurete no matter what gun. I just ordered 8000 rounds of the american eagle 38gr hp from ammo to go, its $188 for 4000 rounds. Between the kids and I we probably shoot between 5 & 10,000 rounds a year.

kansasj;
  If you mean the .22 Spitfires such as Gander Mountain sells, you will find they are the Federal hyper velocity 32 gr at 1550 fps. Snappy little rounds at a fair price..nice, but not world beaters in the accuracy dept (IMO). http://www.22ammo.com/federal.html
  In my experience a hunting, high velocity round that is hard to beat, is CCI Mini mags. For paper punching, you can pay trhe big bucks for Eurosnob ammo, but depending upon the day, rifle & shooter, CCI standards embarass the "high priced spread" just too often.. ;) :D
  Aguila is building some awfully good ammo now days. Problem for me is It's not available locally and I have to grab what I can get at gun shows. Aguila subsonics will give fancy target ammo fits, and the woodchucks I have hit with their subsonic HPs inside a hundred yards went down as if hit with a high velocity HP, perhaps even better in some cases.
