Question
« on: March 15, 2010, 10:59:04 AM »
I have heard that it is possible to safely shoot 2 1/2" 410 shells in a 45-70 handi-rifle. Is this true or urban legend?

Have not and will not shoot a .410 in an H&R 45-70.

Now that being said:  When I was a kid (In the 1950s) we had an old Springfield Trapdoor 45-70.  We did shoot .410 shells through it.  Killed a few Rabbits, missed a bunch, made a lot of noise, had a lot of fun.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

No, dont. Please use the right cartridge for a firearm, we have enough trouble with the anti-gun crowd without giving them a chance at another 'accident'.
There are always several cheap .410s at the gun shows which will do it better anyway. Everything Ive heard about shooting shot thru a rifled barrel has been dismal, too.

There are some guns that will shoot a 45LC and 410, Taurus Judge revolver and I think there is a handi barrel chambered this way but not sure.  I don't know the external dimensions of a 410 hull but the external dimensions of a 45 LC are smaller than a 45 70 cartridge.  Not a good idea to shoot an undersized cartridge in any gun.

This has been discussed before.  If it were safe, you can bet they would have added it to the logo on the barrel and made it a selling point.  I would not do it.  The 410 will "rattle" around in the 45-70 chamber, and the shot will do ? to the lands?

A 45-70 has a rim size of .608" and a base diameter of .504"

For reference, the base diameter of factory .410's is 0.469", and the rim diameter is 0.524".

You could theoretically fire a 410 shell in a 45-70 Handi..but the shell most likely will rupture and get lodged in the barrel..causing damage to it or you..
So...my advise....DON'T DO IT..

If you want to shoot a 410...then get a 410 barrel...
