Performance Cast Bullets

Anybody shooting these in the 45 70 and have any loads they want to share?

My favorite cast load for the 45/70 uses the 460gr. Cast Performance Bullets over 38.0gr. of RL-7. I've used it with good results in several different 45/70s.

I have used the 420s from them but only in my guide gun, they shoot very well, I really like the 187 gr LWFNGCs they make in my .357 max. The 420gr loads I made are to hot for my shoulder out of my .45-70 handi.

This loading is from the Lyman 48th edition for #1 & #3 Ruger data..It was safe in my rifles..can't vouch for yours..Use at your own risk..


Cast Performance 405 grain WLNGC

Remington Nickle Cases Remington 9-1/2 primers Max crimp with Lee Factory crimp die

RX7 start at 46.0 grains.....1820 fps.....Max 51.0+ grains

In a UN-modified Handi rifle...your shoulder is going to give out long before you get to 51 grains...but if you and your rifle can make it there you will be well over 2000 fps with it..Without using the crimp die in regular brass you will be slightly under 2000 fps.These are max loads with this round..USE CAUTION

Again...use caution when working at these velocities I worked up 1/2 grain at a time checking for pressure signs and primer condition...what is a safe load in 1 rifle isn't in another

A nice load..meaning it isn't going to rattle your brain loose...

same bullet-same case-same primer-same factory crimp die

IMR 3031 34.0 grains to start..very mild came in right at 1225 fps with the crimp die..about 1135 with out and some blackening of the case..You can bump it up to 38.5 grains max for about 1400fps

Thanks for the help everyone. 

I have the 460 Cast Performance bullets on the way as well as a bag of the 405 grain Remington Jacketed SPs. Now if Dillon will only get me my shellplate???!!!!  

Also talked a friend of mine into casting for the 45 70.  Looking at gas checked bullets of at least 405 grain and with a flat point.  The 500 grain Lee mould looked interesting but the diameter is listed at .457 which seems too small even with the GC.

The  Remington 405gr. SP are excellent bullets. I use them over 48.1gr. of IMR 3031.
