Buck Horn 209 question?
« on: March 10, 2010, 01:06:56 PM »
Fellows give me your best reason to use- not to use and why.
I started off with Pryodex, did not like smoke and smell plus all the cleaning, switched to tripple 7 a little better now. I see good reports and some bad most of the bad were from misfires and those could have been from a wet swab between shots, Yes I know that you do not have to swab with BH 209, I had that one time with T7, I also see that it is not for use with a traditional side hammer and 11 cap so what is your experiance in using it on side hammer and 11 cap or have you tried it?

Thanks for your input.

Just got 2 cans today and fired 6 shots in my CVA Accura. The stuff is awesome.  If you want to use it in a sidelock, get the mag spark 209 conversion for it. I may have to get a couple of those for my sidelocks. The powder though is super clean.

I just  shooting a inline  and Blackhorn 209 is the thing to use.
clean up i use Hoppie #9
mutaple shots and no swabbing. verry clean burning
no crud ring
higher valosity at a lower powder charge. so its easer on your gun and your sholder.
you use a stanard 209 primer or a mag primer is recomended not a ML primer the hotter the primer the better.
and verry accurat in my gun..
do i need to say more.

BH209 is a progressive burning powder which should be easier on your shoulder as it all doesn't light off at once.  I have seen where T7 is matching and some case exceeding BH209 in velocities and is a very good sub but swabbing between shots and that crud ring really bothered me.   I have friends that use T7 in their side locks and love it. personally I stick w/ BP for my flinty.    As far as a primer  CCI209M has never provided a misfire for me.  I can shoot up to 30 times w/out swabbing and it seems w/ BH that my targets get tighter  the more I shoot.  I also foul my barrel w/ 3 primers prior to shooting or hunting on a clean barrel. I also think I have less smoke w/ BH209 but that might just be my mind.  I let the Breech plug soak in coke while I am using Hoppes #9 and it cleans easily.  I then am able to pour a little bourbon into the leftover coke in the can after I have an easy clean up.  I should also mention I left my and others have left their guns loaded w/ BH 209 for weeks at a time w/ no damage to the barrel and it shoots like I just loaded it that morning.  BUT I am also careful not to bring the gun into a warm environment from the cold. I leave it (primer out) in the garage between hunts. I should also mention that I use finger coits over the muzzle to keep out rain, snow whle hunting and remove that after every hunt. To me it is a good deal, $30+ dollars for the hours of shooting enjoyment is worth it to me when I know I am not going to have ot clean as long when I get home.
Please be sure to check your gun at the door.  WHAT!

I really like it in my Knight. If you plan to use it with your sidelock I think I'd go a different route. They don't recommend it with the sidelock.

Yes I saw that but one of the members said you could convert to a 209 primer and use in sidelock but I think I will just use T7 in it as I dont use it that much and it is also stainless.

Bucker, That was a great post, nothing else needs to be added. I use it in a NEF Sidekick with aftermarket 209 breech plug.
