« on: November 10, 2003, 03:23:40 AM »
I'm looking to set up a TC carbine, everyone seems to rant over the 7/30 but according to my TC reload manual you only gain 100-150 fps over the 30/30.What am I missing? I cant afford a 309jdj so I'm looking at these t
wo.(useing for deer primaraly).Any other suggestions? Thanks SGB What are thoughts on the 30/40?

Plus if you are reloading, you can load light bullets in the 30/30 and come out with similar performance. I have a 7x30 and I'll never get rid of it, but I also have a 30/30 and I'm using it to shoot heavier bullets at shorter ranges. The overlap of available weights of the 2 calibers is broad enough that you can get virtually the same range out of either one. Factory ammo is one factor to consider, and price of brass for reloading is another. If you reload, you have to spend more $ on 7x30 brass or go to the expense of fireforming 3030 brass. So, the 30/30 is slightly more economical and convenient, but the 7x30 is an excellent option all the same. I would personally take my 7x30 over the 30/30, but I would be able to hunt just as effectively without any noticable difference with either one.

i have both also but now only use the 7-30 because i load 110 sierra hp's as dog/yote load and 140 sierra flat bases for deer..i have 3 frames and keep 1 in 22lr, 1 in 7/30 and use the other in 375 win for deer and 223 for crows..

funny thing, in a pistol length, I'd take the 7-30 every time, but in a carbine, I'd take the 30-30...not sure why, but I do...and have bought accordingly....

I don't think you can lose with either, if you are a cast bullet shooter, the 30-30 is better, if you want to later rechamber to 309 JDJ or 30-30 AI the 30-30 is better.  When you load spitzer 125-130 grian bullets in the 30-30 alot of the ballistic edge of the 7x30 is pared down.  But again, I love both.
