87 ford need help

Well the problem i have is when the truck is cold starts fine and purrs like a kitten once it heats up and you turn it off and try to start it up again to crank itdoes not want to start want to kick back and sometimes when it does start the selnoid hangs could this be a timeing issue do i need to set the timeing when it is hot.300 6cyl.

Sounds to me like your baseline timing is too far advanced.

What's the timing set at now?

I agree with Krochus, sounds like a base timing issue.  Disconnect the vacuum advance and idle the engine at around 600 or so and set the base timing.  If the problem persists, check the centrifugal advance in the distributor for broken springs or hanging counterweights.  (At least if I remember the 87 still had cent. advance.)

Thanks fellers, i know just enough about motors to get me in trouble.When you say baseline what are telling me the only thing i know how to do is loosen the bolt on the distrib. and advance one way or the other also should i do this when the truck warmed up.THANKS

coil could be shot too. The get heat soaked and act like that when there bad occasionaly. the starter problem is probably due to you overheating an old starter when it gets finiky. one other thing that could be happening is a vaccum leak. Ive seen it before where a motor ran good and when it warmed and expanded a vaccum leak would pop up. Check your lines and make sure everything is bolted down tight

Well i think i will try a new coil because everything else is new, if i did have a vaccum leak when it does heat up seems like it would run rough.Once again thanks for the help.

could very well be carbon build up in the cylinders. Get the engine up to temp and spray a fine water mist from a spray bottle into the air intake while holding the rpm at about 2000.

I put over 350K miles on an 87 300-6 with no issues.  I changed the spark plugs every 100K.  I did have to change one alternator, but it ate starters.  Was told Ford made bad starters.  After six months a new starter would start running after the engine was shut off.  It would just sit there and run for 10 to 15 minutes, then shut off.  Then 18 months after that I would have to buy a new one.  That was the only problem with that truck in 350 K miles.  When I sold it the truck still passed emissions.

Well i put a new coil on it and had the same problem.Then i talk to a older fella up the streetthat just happend to be a retired mech.I told what all i had done then he told me boy put a knew battery in because the one i have has a dead cell and when it heats up that is when it all goes south so i did problem solved.
