Forend screw replacements for easy takedown?
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:35:45 AM »
Anyone found replacements for the factory forend screws on Contenders or Encores that would allow for easy takedown?

Easiest was the very early snap on forends for 10" octagon barrels.    They could be adapted to longer barrels and forends, but original hardware would be quite costly as they are collectors items now.

I use hanger bars on all of my barrels (that stay on the barrels), so all of my forends are one screw take offs from short pistol barrels to carbine barrels.

If you want easier than that, try duct tape.   ;)
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

If you know a machinest, it would be real easy to make something you would like, maybe a swivel mount for the front screw and a thumbscrew on the back.  Biggest draw back for me in making something for removal w/o tools, is the fact anything I can think of would have to stick out and not be recessed making resting the gun on something for a steady shot a PITA.

What about winged bolts in countersunk wide holes?

Or a bolt with a swiveling 'ear' on the thing.  You could tighten by hand and then just fold the 'ear' in. I have no idea what the swivel head bolts are called, but seems like not so good compared to a fixed wing-head bolt.

I think T/C should reinvent the take-down forend to be just the same attachments as regular, but with two wide-winged bolts counter-sunk into the forend. Sent an email to T/C: we'll see what they say.

I have a forearm made my Neal Cooper and all his stuff comes with torx srews.  I don't really see much difference between the Allen heads or torx heads, I have a T-handle I carry for both.  If you're putting so much toque on the hex heads that you strip it, you're putting way to much torque on it.

Anyway, try Brownells for the torx heads.
