Where to Find Rem 700 Actions
« on: January 10, 2010, 04:50:24 AM »
Where can a guy find Remington 700 actions?  I would like to do a build, but I haven't had a lot of luck finding an action.

BTW, I would like a Stainless Steel Long Action, preferably with the magnum bolt face.

Once upon a time you could get short and long barreled actions.  Haven't seen Rem sell these in a while.  Never recall seeing magnum actions or stainless, but you never know.  I would think the people at Brownell could give you some guidance.  You could call Remington also.

700, When I want to build a custom rifle on the 700, my favorite, I usually haunt the gunshows or anyplace that has used rifles...Pick up a nice used one and go from there...It is usually cheaper than trying to locate a new action...One can sell the take off barrel and stock if you like that helps recoup some of the cost...

I've done exactly what W.C.H. says; a couple of times with M700's and once with a M7.  The only way to get one of those actions at a reasonable price.

Afew years back the custom shop made a run of SS actions my gunsmith got 6 actions 3 standard bolt face others mag.   About the only way now is to buy complete rifle and like other's said just shop around.  Here a site on custom actions
http://www.6mmbr.com/actions.html#Pierce  you can check some other sites that have ad's on guns for sale and you see some action selling pretty cheap and you can run an ad and see what out there also the ad's are free.

I was at a gun shop when a Rem. 700 action came in.  I couldn't believe the price since it was about what a complete rifle would cost.  It would be better to buy a good used rifle and sell off the unused parts.

Used M700's in good shape are a good place to starte.  Sell the barrel abnd stock if you don't plan to use them.

Dicks has M700's for about $450 (or did before Christmas).  They are rather plain but the stock is real walnut and the finish is OK.  (The are called "Special Purpose Wood" on the box - I got one for $425 a couple years ago.

You can't get SS for that price!
I see you posted on LRH too.  You will see a matte action and bolt just sold for $350 + 10 ship.  That was not faced off or anything.
If you want to do a custom build a SS 700 action is a great start.  Any quality rebarrel will cost $600-900 (hill country shows $850 on their site) figuring the cost of a quality SS blank ($300-350) you can see that action work is worth ~$300-500.  Don't forget a few $$$ to open the bolt face if you don't get a magnum.  I don't care if you buy my action or another, but the reality is that mine really is cheap.

You may want to just buy a Stiller custom action.

A little over a year ago, I found a early 700 in 7mm Rem mag.

It sports a factory SS barrel and cost $269 before sales tax.

I am liking the 7mm mag chambering but if I did not or it shot poorly, I would not hesitate to change it.

But it shoots great.

The trigger after I adjusted it ....... is great!

What's not to like????

Hmm, I would take a slightly different approach.  I would go to a large gunshow and look for a Rem.  700 that is cosmetically totally beat to crp by some hunter!   Or that some fool has ruined the stock on, with some crazy alteration.   I have seen rifles like this go for really cheap.   I wouldn't worry about the action being bad, since the vast majoriy of these types of rifles have probably not had 300 rounds put through them.

There is a stainless short action magnum - action only out on gunbroker right now.  It still has 4 days and it is already up to $391.

Type 6mmBR reloading forum sight in your browser and It will get you too a sight that always have 700 action FS. Or you may want to try a 700 clone also advertised on this sight. If you do buy one try and get one that had been trued and blueprinted already, cause if you buy one not done it will cost as much as if not more to have it done. With 700 clones all this will be done. But if you are not really interested in the best accuracy then just an action will do. Lou

Brownells has a limited supply of 700 actions.

You can search for 700 actions.

Here is the link to what I found. Remember very limited number of actions available.
