Scope Mount Question ENCORE 12 Gauge Slug Gun
« on: August 20, 2003, 04:36:30 PM »
I have a Leupold 4X Fixed power Shotgun Scope I would like to transfer
from a Mossberg 695 to my new Encore 12 Ga. Slug Gun.

Curious as to what you all think.  I prefer Leupold optics and rings/bases.
I'm leaning towards selling the fixed 4 X and buying a variable 1X4 shotgun scope.  Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

The fixed 4 has worked for me, but I also enjoy a 1.5 X6, but with a 44mm ojbective. Devide your objective diameter in mm by 7. This is the power you should use in low light.

Scope Mount Question ENCORE 12 Gauge Slug G

Ever consider a red dot scope?  Very quick on the target and wonderful for low light shooting situations that make scopes difficult to use.   Eye relief is nearly unlimited and red dot devices seem to be pretty recoil resistant.

I think I have really gone off the deep end with this but it works so what the hell.  I have taken my 12 gauge slug barrel and forward mounted a Maxima base and attached a Leupold scout scope to it with a set of low Millett rings.  It is a little unconventional, I know, but it works very good for me.  I shot a cloverleaf with it at 50 yards on a semi-windy day.  Have not had a chance to shoot it at 100 yet.  I really like it because you can work the hammer better with heavy gloves on and no worry about the scope coming back to bite you.

I'm a fan of the 1X4 Leupold Shotgun scopes.  Have them on all my slug shotguns and muzzleloaders except my 209X50.  That one has a 2X7 Leupold Shotgun scope just to be a little different.  I particularly like the extra heavy reticle in the woods, and that the parallax is set for 75 yards.  I like to keep the scope on the low power settings, typically 2X.  If I see a deer at some distance and he is unalerted, I'll have time to spin the power dial up.
