357 Max ?
« on: April 03, 2010, 02:51:22 AM »
My 357 handi is on of my favorite rifles, but I have been thinking about a 357 max lately,my question is do yo think your 357 max still shoots the 357 mag as well as it did before you reamed it?
XLI the one to go with.

Mine too. No difference in the accuracy of either the .38 Special or .357 Mag. in mine.
Only difference I can tell is the smile factor... ;D with the .357 Max.

This question is asked a lot, the mini 357 rounds will still shoot fine.  ;)

Don't forget the 360 DW that slips right in between the Mag and the Maxi!

I fought against changing my .357 Mag to a Max for a long time and finally pulled the trigger on it. It shoots .38 Specials. .357 Mags, .360 DW's, and .357 Max's all great. My big fear was ruining the great shooting .357 Mag that I had. No problem, it now shoots them all great!!!!....<><....:)

I haven't got the Max ammo yet to shoot out of mine, but I can say that it still shoots mag and special ammo just like it did before.
Get on the reamer list and have at it. The job is simple to do.

That's funny.  I have a 357 Max (reamed from magnum) barrel that I just picked up on the forum recently.  I took it out today for the first time.

It didn't really like my 357 Magnums (8 grains blue dot, 180 grain Oregon Trail Laser Cast bullet).  It may be due to the bullet weight, not sure.  The bullets were patterning, rather than grouping, at 25 yards.   The same bullets worked great in my Dan Wesson 357 Maximum.

What bullet weight/powder charge are you shooting in your Handi barrels?

Take the plung into the maxi world, mine shoot 357 and 38 just as good as before and the 360DW but I mostly shoot max in mine.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

wellfedirshman, I don't think you are pushing them fast enough.  Go to a slower powder like H-110 or A1680 and work up from starting loads and they should tighten up for ya.  That sounds like a pretty light load for a max case and that weight bullet.  I don't see it listed as a powder to use with the max.  Other good powders are Lil'Gun, 2400, H or IMR 4227.  DP

Thanks DPE.  It was actually a 357 Magnum case.  I am pretty sure I got the load from a Sierra manual.

I will try another load with a 158 grain bullet and see how it goes.

Zoner, I went through the same thing.  My first one shot so well I was afraid to mess with it.  When I got the second and it was as good as the first, I said "O.K., go ahead and risk one of them".  When It came back and shot the same as it did before reaming, I went ahead and did the second one.  After "The Great Three Way Swap" the new one shoots very well also.  Don't be afraid to do it.

wellfedirishman, both mine like factory loads of 158 gr. in .38 and mag and 180 gr. in Maxi.  As soon as the rest of my gear gets here I'll be reloading for them.  Some of the stuff is backordered.
